At the advice of someone from a message board on this site, I went to The Vitamin Shoppe and picked up some Glutamine today. The bottle says to take one 500mg capsule per day between meals. However, a bodybuilder I ran into at the store said that since I'm a big guy (305 lbs on a 5'10" frame), I should take two capsules EVERY day after my workout (even on the 3 days a week when I focus on cardio and do no weights). What do you recommend?

Thanks,

How long have ou been working out? Recommended glutamine usuage is some where near 5g. in the morning and about 10g. POW and another 5g. before bed. 500mg is only 1/2g. Buy the powder form stay away from the effervescent(sp)grade i is carbonated and is pricey, get some pharmacutical grade. I get mine from www.trueprotein.com

I usually take the powdered form as well, plus the stuff is in my protein shake , so I would take it either before and after your workout, or just after your workout, but I would be taking 5 grams per serving, you should really take more than half a gram, to help with your recovery process.

What does POW mean? Are you guys saying the pill form is bad?

By the way, I've been working out a month.

POW was probably a typo....I think he meant PWO which is "post-workout." The problem with the pill form of glutamine is that there just isn't much in them. Many sources recommend 10-20 grams of glutamine per day, which would mean that you'd have to take 20-40 of those capsules each day. I'm sure that would get expensive after a while.
