Hi all,
I am new, been around I just never joined up. Anyway I am 5'5 and 128 lbs and I am rather confused with the program on this site and others. I mean, I am not totally toned, but I am healthy. I run 7 days a week, between 1.5 and 4 miles everyday. it says on here that I need 2 days to rest, (not work out) and I find that I cannot. When I rest, or I just Can't, I get incredibly agressive, moody and hyper.
My question, Is it really a Must to rest from working out? and why?
as for my strength training, yes I do that do, 5 days a week. I realize that is so the muscle can repair itself but with running i don't see any logical reasoning inless I was a beginner. i don't consider myself a beginner runner. this is what happened, the first day I started running was about 1 month ago with my husband on the AF base he is stationed at. I was so out of breath, I only made it .5 miles before I started feeling like i was going to die. since then I have increased to 4 miles without getting terribly winded, and i feel if I take days to rest I will lose everything I worked for in the past month. Am I wrong? i know quite a few people who took several monthes or a year to get to where I am at physically so why should I stop?
oh, and I am not running to lose weight, just to feel better. live better. although the few pounds dropped was an added bonus.

If I am silly to think the way I do, then by all means tell me, any advice I will take into consideration with Thanks.

If your a "runner" then run by all means........if thats what you like to do.

1. long termly this WILL take a toll on your body, wether it be knee strain, lower back problems. It may not bother you much now, but it will later. Everything will eventually catch up with you.

2. what are your goals? If your wanting to "tone up" then you need to do some weight training.

as for the rest.......imagien this.......a brick wall
imagine its 6 bricks thick......you fo workout or run.....your break down 3 bricks , after a day or twos rest, it rebuilds and adds and "extra brick".

with no rest now, after you tear away 3 bricks, you go workout or run again next day, only one brick is there, and you tear that oen down plus 2 more.......so you only have 2 bricks.( not a very thick wall) and so on and so on.

Imagine those bricks as your muscles, the the rebuilding is your body. The body can keep up for a while, but after a while, stress hormones will be realased etc. Immune system will be down, you get sick........or your body just feel slike crap......and your worse off than when you started.

you need rest, period........you doing this to your body is like you going without sleep for a day( 24hours).......it can be done , but its gonna catch up with you sooner or later.

make sense?

even if you simply run you still need time to recover and rest....running 7 days a week is pretty hard on your knees in general...

you can try to add some variety to your training....for example if you really must exercise 7 days a week...add some low impact activities like swimming which doesn't stress the joints as hard...

take pilates/yoga class if you are able...it helps relax your body and your mind

Try lifting weights 2-4 times a week...maybe do circuit training...after a couple weeks you'll be yearning for those days of rest...

yes, alright I guess you all are right. infact I think I may have experienced something to this extent, yesterday infact my lower back was painful and I had the chills, so I decided to Not go running,:( I laid down and I suddenly felt like i had the flu. now i've heard or read somewhere that your immune system is weakened by extensive exercise, but I think it may have been like a body warning sign to slow me down, because I am completely fine today. Yes, I admit I overdid it the day before, farthest I ran and my body was telling me to stop, but I couldn't. I Just Had to make it five miles, or Else. kinda disturbing or what.
I Quit smoking and this is kinda like my New habit, just relace the bad habit with a good habit, but if I were to continue to treat my body this way, I guess it won't be a good habit anymore. Thank you all for your advice, the wall metaphor was very insightful.:)
