Flex magazines brute strength program

If any of you have read the latest issue of flex magazine (not the one with batista on the cover), but the one with chris cook and his two companions, there is a 30 page selection called "the brute strength program. It's a 6 month program geared toward strength gains in the bencpress, deadlift, and squat. Im mainly interested in improving my bench press, which is currently 220. I completely understand how the program is set up, except one thing, and that is the split route, which is a push day, pull day, and assist day. I dont really understand that. My current routine is as follows. day 1- chest/back. day 2- tris bis forearms. day 3- shoulders and all leg muscles. day 4- chest/back. day 5 and 6 rest. repeat. Once again, i dont really understand this schedule and im having trouble setting it up for myself. Can somebody please help me set up the schedule theyre talking about.

And also, when would i check my one rep max, to see if ive made any gains?

You should try a new max every 6-8 weeks. Focus on exercises that build your bench/squat/deadlift.

look sliek to me your doing a bodybuilding routine.....because tris and bis I do not like as a "day" workout.


If your wanting to concentrate on benching, then train for benching....everything else is secondary or assisting muscles. ( example back and triceps)


I'd stay away from flex......try the west side template.....I have added over 40lbs to by bench in about 3 4 months, as well as my bench and dead has gone up too.

When I 1st started this routine I was doing 275 for a last set of like 2...on a good day. Other day I did 315 with a pause at the bottom.

I look at that routine and I don't necessarily like it because you're still using fairly high reps...

push/pull is a fairly new design concept where you do a day of pushing exercises and a day of pulling exercises...asst day is a day designed to train your other auxillary muscles...not directly involved in any lift in particular...biceps, calves, etc...

I subscribe to Flex (though that may be changing). This is the exact same program that they ran 4 years ago etc. While it will produce results it is still a program that may or may not fit you. I say try it out and see.

Yes tris/bis- i do want to be a bodybuilder. I usually dont go by magazine programs, i just do my own thing. But this program was stating that one can make outrageous gains in his squat bench and deadlift. Flex was saying up to 50% of your current max. Ex- if one benches 200, after the six month program, he could possibly reach 300. Is this to good to be true? :laugh:

.......thats a 16lb gain on bench a month.....thats not farfetched......it COULD be done......for a beginner YES.......but in 6 months time i'd think the most the average joe could do or get out of it would be 50lbs or so.


pull, push assist day........hmmmmm.......that would mean......bench, militaries, and squats all done on one day

dls, lower back one day 2

and arms, lats, etc on the other day.....


to me this is like going to a psychologist, and asking about a mole on your butt. Probelsm with the mind... see a psych......medical problems ask a docotor. Wanna be a bodybuilder.......read body building mags......be a powerlifter......read a powerlifting mag.

Alot of bodybuilders are strong( well claim) Ronnie being very strong with a 2 rep dl of 805. But for th emost part bodybuilders are bodybuilders an dpowerlifters are powerlifter........both don't correlete or go together at all.

Yes the gains they claim are probably to be had by complete beginners or novices...nore experienced lifters are less likely to get such results...

Funny you say that andrew, because flex says that an experienced lifter, or a lifter who has been lifting for a long time, could only expect to gain up to around 50 lbs within the 6 month period.
