Ok ive been thinking / reading alot about body building and powerlifting now at least more then i have before and noticing how much of a difference there actually really is... So ive decided that i think i will just ditch body building all together... and Just stay in with powerlifting :) i mean who wants to look Pritty and actually be weak??? id rather have a hidden strength :) anyway was wondering how much muscle do u actually gain that is visible to a body building extend in differences between strength/powerlifting and body building??

what i mean by my question is basically, Will my "strength gains" make me look Just tonned and muscley? i dont want to be huge muscles no more dont care anymore just i wouldnt mind if i looked about the size of a average footy player or boxer.. will my foundation basically look different? considering doing strength training i would be more less taking on exercises that i am concerned with gains (increase in numbers )in

Squats
Deads
Benching
Rows
Cleans
and Military presses... with overall speed

bodybuilder goal: do exercises that will get help get mass before strength....
powerlifting goal: do exercises that will help get strength before mass....

As a powerlifter....you'll still get muscle gains if you increase your caloric intake steadily.....however your strength gains will outpace your muscle gains...

also you can combine both styles to help you achieve your goal....like using bodubuilding split or exercises while using very low reps/volume and high rest period and longer inbetween workout rest days.....

nah if i was to combine both body building and powerlifting
i would probably have a routine like westside template where i just do all my main lifts for 6 weeks straight..

Then in the next 2 weeks i would go straight for just "bodybuilding" where i try to "feel" my muscles with less rest time... for a recovery, then have a week off and go for those 8-9 week cycles at a time.. otherwise if i was to mix bodybuilding with powerlifting i would probably have

example Chest
Barbel Bench : 5*5 ( 3-5minutes break )
that would be for strength
then for bodybuilding i would do
Flys where i really go for a "pump" maybe 4 sets reps as 16,14,12,10 or so.. ( with about 60-90 seconds break)

which u guys rekcon??? im thinking of going just straight westside routine for 6 week periods at a time and just focus on lifts and not getting big.. then have a 2 week period after it where its bodybuilding then have a week or so off as a routine wat u guys think?

in saying this, after doing a 6 week Westside routine, straight for strength gains... then having a 2 week period of bodybuilding mass gains what kind of routine would i be looking for that would be good for 2 weeks that would help just put on mass and recover my CNS from strength gains? ( after which is 8 weeks and i have a week off) also which parts are better to do cardio more during strength or during bodybuilding?

timmy with the powerlifting you will also have some hypertrophy of the muscles. They jost wont be chiseld as a body builder. Well welcome to the brother hood!

I think that after a while of powerlifting, you wont see any need to go back to bodybuilding. And yes, you will build muscle, but it will be functional muscle, as opposed to just that sarcoplasm goo that bodybuilders develop. You may not look as well built as a bodybuilder, but you may get much bigger than some bodybuilders and you will certainly be way stronger.

I had been bodybuilding for a while( reps wise anyways) and after I stated the west side.........my chest measurement shot up 2in.......which of coarse means my back and chest has gotten thicker.

And I have increased the weights I workout with by 50 or more lbs.

thing abotu powerlifting you must reamember......there are 3 lifts.......bench, dead, squat......thats it.....everythig else is secondary or a axhilary lift.

Meaning....your bench will go up.......however you only train shoulders as a secondary lift to help with benching. Same with rows, and cleans. Cleans are for speed, and to increase speed and power. Cleans agin are secondary, to help build other parts of body to help with the 3 main lifts.

If your traing for cleans...I think thats a whole different workout. Your getting into olympic syle stuff, which is defferent I belive as well.

If your trying to do 4 major lifts.......then your going to over train. You have 3 lifts, squat bench dl.......but I only dl 2 times ever 3 or 4 weeks. But I do stuff on my squat days the build my dl......like rack pulls, speed dls, cleans, hang cleans.

I mean I fyour doing 10 sets of 3 of squats, plus 2 3 excercises of axhilary work.........4 to 6 sets.......yoru spent.....trying to do some dls.......or cleans is just too much......even on a upper day.

substitute cleans for deadlifts....every other week...cleans are a great way to work on deadlifts...including heavy shurgs, high pulls, goodmornings......to train deadlift you don't actually need to do deadlift....especially if you train your back every week...

Thanks guys, menace what are high pulls?? and how are they formed and work exacctly?? thnx i probably already know them just do them under a different name.. lol

'Washington, D.C.: Could you describe, in detail, the proper technique for doing the high pull? Plus, exactly what muscle does it target?

I am sick of upright rows. They stink.

Thanks coach.

Marty Gallagher: Upright rows are a loser exercise that should be banned.

A high pull is just that; you pull high.

Start with the bar at your feet and with a double-overhand grip tug the weight upward. As it passes your belt you straighten and shrug your shoulders. Immediately return the bar to floor - no holding the bar aloft. That is one rep. You can really handle some poundage so be careful. Think of it as a deadlift with a shrug at the top. Builds traps (the muscles next to the neck on top of the collarbone) like mountain ranges. '

So at the end of each rep i just through the weight down just drop it or something? and all i do is just one rep? or do i bend over and do it again ... what would be a deseriable rep , set and time break scheme for doing these?

usually "speed" movements you rest 30 sec to 45 I believe......max lifts go min plus.

I like to do cleans after a version of a dl.......because my body is used to pulling more weight off the ground, and the clean "feels" light in my hands and to my body.

that 30-45 second rule i thought only applied as speed as u said but at around 50% of ur 1rep??

so what reps and sets would i be using this in and do i just let it drop at the end of each rep? obviouslly .. ill make sure i got a carpet or matt or sumthing under neither :O

The box squat cycle is as such:
Wk1 12 sets of 2 @ 55%
Wk2 10 sets of 2 @ 58%
Wk3 8 sets of 2 @ 60%
Take 35-45 sec TBS

The second 3 week cycle keep the same weight for each week just add mini or light bands to the bar(depends on strength level).

I do my reps 3 reps or lower. After that I tend to loose speed, and just "hoss" it up there lol
