Hey all...as you can read from my profile my goal is to lose weight...about 15 lbs in a month and a half. Well I just started working out last week and have started to eat more (but small meals) throughout the day to try and wake up my metabolism which was asleep for a year or 2. Well I'm also drinking about a gallon+ of water a day and drinking a protein shake 2-3 times a day between meals. Problem is that I've put on 5 lbs in less then a week :surprised:. Could this just be the prelude before my metabolism kicks in and/or water weight, since I wasn't drinking much water 2 weeks ago. Is there something I need to change in my diet or should I just keep going the way I'm going.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! |

I'm thinking that the water is what is causing this weight gain. If you are still eating the same amount of calories which isn't over your caloric needs for the day, it is definately just the water weight. Keep drinking the water it's good for you. Keep us updated on your progress.

Good...glad to hear that. Before I started the diet I was drinking about 4-6 cokes a day (I know...bad bad bad) and literally 0 water. I'll still drink 1 coke a day...usually early afternoon...but now it doesn't seem to taste very good now, so I could do without it. Otherwise I haven't changed my diet up a whole lot besides cutting out cokes and sweets. I tracked it for 3 days on fitday.com and saw that I was getting too much fat and not enough proteins. So I try to make sure I'm not snacking on sweets through the day and I've replaced it with a protein drink instead.
I'm hoping that next week when I weigh myself I'm dropping back down to my 165 (when i started the program) and then a few lbs each week from there. I'll repost next week on this thread with an update. Any other suggestions on what this 5 lbs could be or how to get rid of the excess water weight? |

Thought from another ft site novice.
If it's water weight your body will figure it out and balance itself soon. It's probably in shock asking "What the heck is this??" Replacing the caffine of coke would also explain why your body is hoarding the water right now. Caffine dehydrates you a lot more than some realize. My guess is in a week or so you'll see a difference. Also, if you're working out (in addition to the diet) you may see a shift in weight distribution. You may not lose the pounds the way you expected/hoped to, but you may gain muscle and lose some of those "extra" inches. Balance! Keep posting - would like to hear how it goes for you as I'm battling those last 15-ish pounds too! |

Thanks again...I'm doing a 30-40 minute Circuit training workout Mon/Wed/Fri...specifically for the reason of trimming the fat and build some lean mass. Considering just a 10 minute HIIT jog in the mornings that I don't workout just to keep my metabolism pumping. I've always been built stocky (all the men in my family are) so I expect to put on muscle mass in the process either way...just focusing on the fat for now. However I'm 5'4" and weigh 165 (170 with the water weight...lol) so I still think I could shed a considerable amount, before my body would start building any more mass.
Thanks again and I'll update ya. By the way this is only my 10th post but you guys and girls give some great advise...glad I ran across this site. |

Believe you're referring to Basal Metabolic Rate. So 165 lbs and 31 years of age if I figure it right it's about 1700.
Diet consist of the following, not great but better then it used to be. Days of work out/Days of rest -7am- protein Drink and eggs (scrambled)with biscuit/eggs (scrambled)with biscuit -10am- light snack (crackers)/protein drink -12pm- haven't quite worked this out yet...anything from a small cheesburger to a Salad -3pm- protein drink -6pm- Dinner with family(grilled chicken or something fairly healthy) -10pm- protein drink (will be mixing with milk for this one for slow digestion throughout the night) That's about it...like I said still getting into the rythm of a new diet...unfortunately I'm a picky eater so finding things I can bear is tough to do. First priority was dropping the cokes which would have account for in excess of 700 calories a day. Otherwise working out on a circuit training program 3 days a week. and should be burning in excess of 2000-2300 calories. Currently I'm not looking to get super healthy like some of you guys just trying to get a manageable and healthy level and then maintain it. |

first of all, cheese on the burger and egg yolks on your eggs, QUIT IT. lol
also, it seems to me you are consumming to much protein sahkes. it is not that it is bad, but it is ideal to make food your prior source of protein. chakes as what they are: supplements, and for me, they are only good postworkout (or when you dont have food and need extra protein). if tyhis is your deit, it loos like you are not consumming any fat. have you take a look at what are "EFA"(essential fatty acids)? i invite you to read on this. one tip: if you are a pick eater, just like me, lol, and you feel hungry between meals, grab an ounce of peanuts, almonds, walnuts, or any kind of nuts: they are good for you and if you eat them slowly next meal will be closer. |

Well the cheese on the burger is easy...the egg yolk not so easy since I don't prepare it (breakfast caterer at work and menu is limited). As per protein shakes I can cut that down to 1 after workout and maybe 1 before bed. However what should I replace the snacks with to take in more EFA...would a couple of fruits a day be sufficient for this?
Also about the picky eating thing...nutty products is my weak point...can't stand em...any of em. lol |

OK doing some research and basically I'm looking for Omega 3...correct. I'm guess that this isn't easily obtained by food sources other then fish products (which i can eat but not likely on a daily basis). Should I look at a flax seed oil mixed (or a fish oil pill)into my protein shake and if so how many times a day? Would this be sufficient?
Also reading up on this I understand why I have high cholesterol. lol Just when I think I got all the tools and knowledge I need I find another breakthrough. Dr is planning on putting me on meds for it, but I think I'll try this for a month or so then have it rechecked. |

DAMN.. Too bad you cant stand nutty products...
but, yeah the flax seed are suficient, and take as much as you can as long as it doesnt exceed your daily caloric intake. and for the snack, what is your snack? and what does it contains? |

I know I don't make it easy...always been a picky eater...wife hates it. Funny though I don't seem to mind the protein drinks (mainly cause I can chug em and be done)...not big on bars either...unless you can recommend a good one that doesn't taste like cardboard. Otherwise I've been using the protein drink as 1 snack and try to eat crackers or something for another snack. Usually club crackers, good carbs and protein, but high in bad fats. Planning to use fruit...but any suggestions would be appreciated?

fruit seems good, althou need to try to eat fruit in the morning like blueberries in your oatmeal would be fine, but keep it there only. And not inferior fruits like bananas...blueberries, strawberries, peaches, apples.
oats would be another good idea. |

i just found something on fruit, maybe it will help.
this was taken from a post from BB1FIT and i think it is what you need to know about fruit. " Fruits are a great healthy food, and normally a big part of a healthy diet. But, if fat loss is your goal, then fructose is something you never need in your diet. The rules have to change a bit there. Certain foods you eat elicit a thermogenic effect, thus causing your body to burn more fat than one would expect from a caloric deficit alone. Fruit with an excellent Thermogenic/Carbohydrate Ratio include: Apples, Blueberries, Grapefruit, Peaches, Strawberries vs. Inferior Thermogenic Effect Fruits: Bananas, Dried Fruit, Raisins, etc., Watermelon " |

I assume if Grapefruits are excellent Thermogenic/Carbohydrate Ratio then Oranges would be as well? Terrific information though! Thanks a lot Kak and BB1FIT.
Also I have good news. Either the scale was broken monday or it was out of whack today (because it was moved for some renovation). But I jumped on it (despite my persistently saying I wouldn't) and it showed 162.5. If it's right then I dropped the 5 lbs of the water weight and an extra 2.5 lbs in just over a week. Gonna check it again Monday and find another scale somewhere to confirm it. I can say I don't feel as bloated as I did the last few days so maybe my body's figuring out what to do with all this water finally. Oh and also I picked up a body fish oil with GLA from GNC last night. Had a great workout this morning though...still sweating it off as we speak and it's been over an hour. Think I finally found my rythm and routine. I need to get a before picture done soon before I get to my goal. I'll try to get that today. Otherwise I'm excited to work out Friday...I love this feeling after a good workout. |
