if your goal is mass, is it better to start out with heavy weights then work your way down or the opposite?

The first set is always a warmup set, but then after you should always lift as much as u can, and go UP in weight every set.

This is a common question, with no real definitive answer. Each individual is different. I personally like going heavy first while I am strongest, makes sense to me and works for me. I then do my sets of reps. Others like to pyramid up with descending reps. I feel this robs you of strength, thus robbing you of overload, which is what intices the muscle to grow. So the choice is really yours. Try both, find out what works best for you, and do that. When your gains slow down or stop, change things up. Best of luck...

few reps / lots of weight = size / bulk many reps / less weight = toned / ripped
but as said ALWAYS! warm up first! don't just go trying to lift heavy weight as you will strain your muscles and do more damage then good.

I think you should always start with a light to moderate weight.. just a few reps to warm the muscle before you increase the weight

Your not gonna see any any results in a short period. Allways expect at least 4-6 wks to see results in any kind of a program.

I, too, go for overload over fatigue in most cases. I like to go heavy early and make sure my muscles are forced to adapt neurally. The fatigue factor and metabolic adaptation will come over the course of the workout. BTW, remember never to push yourself on your warm up set - the idea is just to prepare your muscles, not to do any work.
