hello ,
i am new and going on 3 weeks now of exercise and diet and i just got a treadmill for cardio and i am wanting to loss some weight before june or july ( mainly belly, thighs and love handles and shape up the rest. so i was wondering when the best time to use the treadmill is? i've heard in hte morning on an empty stomach . but being new to the treadmill thing i was also wondering for how long. i'm ok at 3.0 speed on the treadmill could probably go faster but for now i want to go slow, so i dont injure myself so if anyone has some advice on the treadmill and how long to use it i would appreciate it.
thanks for all the help

welcome alierhall to FT... to tell u the truth.. there is no "spot reduction".. so you'll have to lose body fat from every where.. you cannot "force" ur body to reduce fat from only one place... now what i've read here.. cardio in the morning is good to burn more fat but u have to drink a protein shake or something b4 it...and as soon as u are done with ur exercise.. u need another shake or something again...
and u r right on taking it easy in the begining.. according to my information.. fat burning starts after 20 mins of cardio.. so anywhere between 30-45 min is good enough (as ur goal is to lose fat)... one suggestion though.. after few days try to go a bit faster.. cuz if u r not "pushing" ur body beyond it can easily do.. it won't use any excess stored energy (fat)...
i think i'll leave the rest explanation to the advance guys and gurus :)
PS: one thing more... consistancy and committment is the key to success

Make sure you know your max HR. You want to start first with a warm up(5 min) then get into the zone and stay there for about 25 mins followed by a 5 min cool down.
A protein shake is not necessary before your cardio, nor is it necessary afterwards. The key here is to have a balanced meal 2 hrs before or a snack about 1/2 hr before.
Here is a good routine you may want to try depending on your weight you can burn around 325 (differs for everyone)calories.
To find your Max HR do this calculation....220 minus your age= max HR. Do not go more than 85% of the max.
Remember if you haven't done cardio in a while, try the routine at shorter time period.
0-5:00 min walk at 3.0 to 3.5mph (no incline)
5-5:30 aintain speed and increase incline to 4%, at the same time punch your arms forward in front of you (alternating right and left arm.
5:30-6:30 walk with arms at sides (still at 4%)
6:30-7:00 Increase incline to 6% and throw more forward punches.
7:00-8:00 Lower incline to 3% and just walk.
8:00-8:30 Increase incline to 8% and punch towards ceiling.
8:30-9:30 Lower incline to 3% and just walk
9:30-32:00 5 sets of punch cycles,(repeat the punch cycles from 5:00 to 9:30)
32:00-37:00 Cool down by walking at 3 mph to 3.5 mph with no incline.

Nadia....about 2 lbs a week is safe to burn fat. Any more then that and you're likely burning muscle.

On the tread mill spend atleast 30mins at a time on it, and do it 2-3 times a day. Morning, afternoon, right before bed. If you go good at 3.0, push yourself to go 3.5 or 4.0. You get results by making your self uncomforable. Take care.
