am i still going to benefit from lifting heavy if i lift in the morning and play basketball later in the night? i want to continue putting on my mass like i have been but also want to play basketball a day or two a week. just wondering if i could still benefit from mass training doing both in the same day, as long as i spaced them out by 8 hours or so.

yes you will be fine,
what determines if you adding mass or noyis your diet. remember to eat a lot, even more than you usually are since you are adding basketball to weightlifting

weight lifting in the morning will not affect your basketball performance in the afternoon.....however if might be a good idea to space them out if you're prone to DOMS....
eat more carbs to account for your basketball....of the complex variety...
