I was just reading in fitness magazine, it said:

"As a general rule, if you're looking to build thicher, more pronounced abdominals, do sets of 10-15 reps (of some kind of abs exercises); 15-25 for some size and degree of muscular endurance; and more than 25 reps if you're after a toned appearance without much size"

I think this is weird, doesn't less reps=less size???, Is it that to get a "washboard middle section" i need to do more reps, but if i do less reps, i get bigger abs??, its weird, can anyone explain?

You must use resistance to obtain more defined abs.

train your abs hard but make sure to do some intense cardio too. It worked for me.

abs are just like any other muscle group.. work them hard.. 2 to 3 times a week.. and give them enough time to recover.. clearing them would be done in kitchen (words taken from others who are a lot more advanced them i am :)).. basically u need to look after ur diet to get them clear once they are developed...

as charlie said.. u need to give them resistance (weights that is).. to define them and make them bigger...

hope i helped

size or growth is determined in training by volume and rest....along with many other lifestyle factors like diet, hormones, stress levels, etc.

this in practical use would be: low reps with a high amount of weight...AND a high amount of sets could have the same growth effect as a lower amount of weight with a high amount of reps...AND a LOW amount of sets as long as the total amount of volume are the same or close.

ex.
4 reps @ 120lbs x 6 to 10 sets
10 to 12 reps @ 60lbs x 2 to 4 sets
*this is an example of exercise protocol that nets similar volume and could POSSIBLY cause the same training results (once again, this all depends on many lifestyle factors)

another key point to make about abs is that the rectus abdominus is primarily fast twitch fibers that respond better to high resistance and low reps...with a high amount of sets.

No point to this post, but I'll say it anyways. I've got a friend of mine I've known for about 8 or 9 years, and he's always had a 6 pack. He doesn't work out, but is active in sports maybe once or twice a week, at most. The guy drinks maybe 2-4 beers a night and easily a 6-12 pack at day on weekends...none of this light stuff either. I figure his metabolism will catch up with him someday. See told ya no point to that post.

Quoting from chulla711:

um, abs are slow twitch.

no there really not. Your abdominal muscles are phasic muscles, which means they are primarily composed of fast twitch muscle fibers. which means, like Nellyboy said, they will respond better to low repetitions. You can do all the sit ups you want and never have a defined or strong midsection.
