this is an old post but if you do decide to use them you are only cheating yourself.

again what is the point of your comment? this has been said....said some more....and then some more...I mean if you bring up this post at least say something new....

....I mean I really don't understand why there's any reason to bring up a thread and say 'yea dude steroids suck..'...eh.....

I think the best way to deal with the steroid issue is to educate oneself as much as possible....to know the benefits, the health risks, reasons pro/con use of steroids, proper dosages, diff types of steroids, etc...just for general knowledge....I think saying 'steroids suck or you only cheat yourself' or whatever else as much as I hate to say it....too simplistic of a perspective to take on the issue....

This happened to pop up so I thought I might post here instead of making /another/ steroid thread.

My friends father (49 years old) has had a problem with his spline (I don't know if that's how you spell it). It turns out he's been anemic for 30 years. His doctor put him on doses of steroids 15 mg dwindling down to 5, hoping to cease when the size of his spline goes down more. He was asking me if there were any key exercises to do while taking them that would develop a good base for when he dwindles off. He's feeling better from the anemia now that the doctor has given them to him, and he wants to start working out.

I doubt he is on a anabolic steroid. He is on a corteosteroid for inflamation of his spleen.

I see, and that wouldn't help him with his workouts? (I don't know much about steroids)

absolutely not. corticosteroids have the opposite effect on muscle building to anabolic steroids

Okay, I'll be sure to pass along the information. Thanks Mmaibohm and Princess!

I didn't understand your original comment to begin with as it relates to your comments afterwards....then wouldn't the question be the 'sideeffects' of a particular steroid because of a 'medical necessity'..ie do the benefits of the steroid taken for a medical reason overweigh the risks involved....that's if he's in fact taking some type of steroid...

one more article
corticosteroid drug
Related: Pharmaceuticals

(kôr&180;tekōstâr´oid) , any one of several synthetic or naturally occurring substances with the general chemical structure of steroids . They are used therapeutically to mimic or augment the effects of the naturally occurring corticosteroids, which are produced in the cortex of the adrenal gland . Corticosteroids are very powerful drugs that affect the entire body; even corticosteroids used on large areas of skin for long periods are absorbed in sufficient quantity to cause systemic effects. Corticosteroids, as well as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), the pituitary gland substance that stimulates the adrenal cortex, have modifying effects on many diseases. Some corticosteroid derivatives mimic the action of the naturally occurring steroid hormone aldosterone , causing increased sodium retention and potassium excretion. Others have the same effects as the naturally occurring steroids cortisone and cortisol , which are classed as glucocorticoids; these affect carbohydrate and fat metabolism, reduce tissue inflammation, and suppress the body's immune defense mechanisms. Cortisone and hydrocortisone are used to treat Addison's disease , a disorder caused by underproduction of the adrenal cortex hormones. These and synthetic steroids are used extensively to treat arthritis and other rheumatoid diseases, including rheumatic heart disease. They are also used in some cases of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, in severe allergic conditions such as asthma, in allergic and inflammatory eye disorders, and in some respiratory diseases. The anti-inflammatory, itch-suppressing, and vasoconstrictive properties of steroids make them useful when applied to the skin to relieve diseases such as eczema and psoriasis and insect bites.

Because corticosteroids lower the resistance to infection, patients on steroid therapy cannot be vaccinated for smallpox or immunized. The administration of corticosteroids also causes underproduction of the natural hormones by the adrenal cortex, and so ACTH or corticosteroid therapy must always be withdrawn gradually. In addition, when used in large doses for long periods of time, the drugs can cause atrophy of the adrenal cortex. Side effects of steroid therapy include glaucoma, excess hair growth, and imbalance of many substances, including calcium, nitrogen, potassium, and sodium. Many of the synthetic corticosteroids, such as prednisone, prednisolone, triamcinolone, and betamethasone, are more potent than the naturally occurring compounds.

Menace,

First off thanks for the article. Just to clarify he has been anemic for over 30 years and the doctor said his spleen was dangerously enlarged. They put him on steroids to try and avoid having to remove the spleen. Since being on them, he has had a new energy come to him. He assumed that since he was on "steroids" he could try and increase his workout at the same time. We mis-assumed that "steroids" are "steroids" and he wanted to know if he could get an increased workout before the doctor slowly drops his dosages to get him off the steroid.

In regards to the side-effects: The drug is working and his spleen has decreased tremendously in size, avoiding having his organs removed. So he was not as concerned about the side effects since it avoided surgery.

Thanks again for the article because it did clarify up what that kind of steroid does
