I had a killer workout with my personal trainer two days before Christmas. As soon as I got home, I took some ibuprofin to prevent muscle soreness (didn't want my holidays to be ruined). I was a little sore the next day, but not nearly as bad as if I didn't take it. I told my trainer about this, and he said that the statement "no pain, no gain" is true, and that because I took ibuprofin, my muscle fibers didn't break down like they should have, and my session was virtually worthless. Any opinions on this from anyone?

Hi carolj, I dont think that ibuprofin will render your work out session worthless. I am not a Doctor or personal trainer but I believe that the ibuprofin acts as an anti inflamitory reducing swelling hence reducing the soreness in the muscles. I have used it on several occasions I have been told that taking ibuprofin before the work out can reduce the workout to the muscle, but i think you are ok to take it after your work out.

I remembered reading somewhere that it does inhibit protein synthesis. I wanted to find the article for you to make sure I was right before posting it. So, here is the article, and good reading. http://www.ast-ss.com/articles/article.asp?AID=118

Joeint....I wish I had an answer for you on that one. I read both articles too. My gut feelings are like this, if you have a problem such as inflammation of an area, and you know that is all it is, by all means if it makes the difference of training or not training, then take your ibuprofen before training. Now not at the expense of a severe injury where you run the risk of a bigger problem though. I personally try to avoid ibuprofen at all if possible. This is just my personal philosophy. Best of luck, and if you find any more on this subject, would be interested in reading it.

I remember reading something similar regarding aspirin, too (or are those the same?).
