I am coming to the end (last two weeks) of a 12-week periodized weightlifting program. For the first month, I used moderately heavy weights, 2-3 exercises per body part, 3 sets per exercise and 10-12 rep range. Second month, some rotation of exercises, heavier weight, same number of exercises per body part, same sets per exercise and 8-10 rep range. Third month, more rotation of exercises, still heavier weight, same number of exerises per body part, same sets per exercise and 6-8 rep range. During this period (in which I also increased my protein intake and started using creatine and glutamine), I have seen pretty good gains, recovering most of the strength I lost during an aggressive weight loss period (40 pounds lost in 6 months). I think that I had read somewhere that at the end of such a periodized cycle it is good to go either extremely light on weights or even take some time off altogether before starting up a new cycle. Has anyone else heard this? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A good week off is a good idea at this point for you. Not only will the muscles thank you, but you have been stressing ligaments, tendons, and nerve endings that are more susceptible to injury than the muscles are. Plust the mental attitude upon return is great. You may notice an initial strength dropoff upon return, but this is shortlived. Your strength will soon be back and gains past where you were.
