Hi, I am doing the Mass Gain Workout (love it) but my workout partner and I both get bruises on our front shoulders when we try to go heavy on the front squats. using the squat pad makes it too hard to grip in front, any suggestions? We do heavy back squats, but the feel in your quads from front squats is quite different, so we would like to continue to do them.

Role a a towel and put it on your shoulders.
I've also seen a special plastic protection you can use (ask in the gym if they can order one!)
Good luck!!

Thanks - i will try the towel, but we were thinking it would slip.. We work out in my studio - so maybe i should look online for the plastic support (is that like the stingray or something?).

asimmer, to be honest ever sinced I've done squats (front or back) I've gotten bruised. I've used the polystyrene pads (they split after a couple of months btw) - never heard of a plastic pad though, but I'd imagine it too would split. I have a friend who's a good personal trainer and he doesn't know of a decent pad for squatting with. If you find one do tell, it'll save him buying so many of the polystyrene ones.

I tend to use a towel wrapped over the bar for back squats. It's a bit clumsy, but once you're doing the squats it's better than the pad (because it'll be thicker). I don't have the problem when holding the bar in front because I stand like a vampire (arms crossed over chest) and squeeze the bar against my chest, taking a lot of the weight on the inside of my elbows.

Either way though, I reckon you'll get bruised - human's aren't designed to carry heavy metal sticks across our chests!

I have found decent pads with nylon coats that close with velcro - they last pretty well and are comfortable for back squats. Back squats aren't as bad because I have enough meat in my shoulders and traps that I can shrug it up and protect my neck, I guess we will just have to play around with the front squats and see if there is anyway to get more comfortable. Maybe it is just a matter of building up my front delts more? Seems like it will bruise anyhow, I am not a petite flower. I guess I will just buck up before someone calls a wahmbulance for me,eh?
