whenever i start pushing heavy weight, or the final couple reps in a set i get a feeling on the left side of my throat just below my jaw like something is going to pop. It's happened for a while, and nothing has ever actaually felt sore after or anything, but i was just curious if anyone knows what this is or how to avoid it. I'm not pushing any extreme weight or anything like that, I'm making sure to keep good form. thanks a lot

are you breathing thru the lift and making sure not to clench or grind your teeth?

ya, i am causcious of that, however, one thing i did read today that i never knew before, is that i'm not suppose to breathe in through my nose while weight lifting...could that have anything to do with it?

It doesn't matter whether you breathe through your nose or mouth, you get more oxygen to your muscles quicker if you use your mouth anyways, I doubt it's your breathing. If you don't already inhale as you go down on the bench press, and exhale while pushing it back up. Make sure you keep the back of your head completely on the bench otherwise you might be causing your neck muscle to spasm. You could always try stretching your neck before, but it may just be one of those things that you'll always have while weight lifting. A lot of people have things like that. My thumb pops out of place when I do deadlifts because I broke it a lot time ago. We all have little things that are annoying and wont go away. Take care.
