'ab's are built in the kitchen'
This I have been told now how do I lose the fat while maintaining my muscle???

All programs point to weight loss - weight gain - maintain weight.

Can you lose fat and build up muscle at the same time??

So much info on this site, its easy to get lost. Just like real life, I need direction. I think my profile sums up where I am - this is a very new world for me.

Abs are different to other muscle groups. It doesn't require a great deal of energy to train. Therefore you can still exercise your abs while losing weight.

It's a bit different for other muscles though. You would have to go for lean muscle, rather then muscle mass.

For a complete beginner it can be possible to build muscle and lose body fat while having a caloric deficit in your diet...this is not always the case but it is possible...for experienced lifters...it's nearly impossible...

Th expression you mentioned refers to the fact that everyone has abs....the reason that you can't see them is because they are obscurred by a 'layer of fat'....so that to see your abs you need to strengthen or gain muscle in your abs and most importantly lose weight/body fat...

When you'll be losing weight/body fat.....you'll probably still lose a bit of muscle ...how much muscle you lose depends on your nutrition( you should be eating about 1.2-1.5g of protein during this time, taking Fish oil supplement...1-2g a day, BCAAs help)...

Abs are used in nearly activity you're a part of during the day and exercises you perform in the gym...so training them with about 10-12 hard sets once a week is more than enough...just make sure to use progressive increasing resistance(from workout to workout...as with any other body part)...failing at the prescribed reps...

Be patient....try to lose about 1-2 lb of weight a week...so that you spare as much muscle as possible during the diet....
