What kind of Ab work out are you doing? Are these breathing cramps, or muscle tension cramps? Can you run and get the same kind of cramps? Where are the cramps?

You should work out the abs the same way you work any muscle group. Don't use the AB routine for cardio because it is not nearly as effective for losing body fat as say riding a bike for 30 minutes or sprinting for 15 minutes.

Basic Ab routine shouldn't ever exceed 16 sets.

Perform your movement controlled- 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down.

If it is muscle cramps like charlie horses then you need potassium and water. Sometimes Chromium can cause an electolyte imbalance. Are you taking Chromium and how much?

I get muscle tension cramps. This is the only area that I hate to work because of muscle cramps.

sorry to say this guys, but if you work them abs and don't feel the burning sensation, you are not really working them. You need to wonderful burning pain to know you are on the right track and eventually they fade away. as rgartman and ravenwolf stated, breathing is a very important part of abdominal workouts and as well as any other part of your body workouts.
