okay, the thing is each of my muscle groups arent the same strength - for instance my triceps and weaker than my biceps, so its harder workin triceps. It's too much of a bother to change the weights everytime i'm doing each muscle group, so is it ok if i do heavy weight but low number of reps with weak muscle groups but with others i do the same weight but more reps, until i cant do anymore?

yeah but what im asking is if, for both muscle groups i can handle the weight, can i do more reps with one muscle group and less with the other but more sets? or does less reps more sets do a totally different thing than more reps less sets?

This is what you do-
Change the weights! It only takes like 5 seconds! Why waste the time and effort just because you are too lazy to change the amount of weight on a bar? -------------- :Hard work equals great results!: |

ok i'll change the weights....but i was just wondering what exactly is the difference between doing heavy weights with less reps, and lighter weights with more reps. I heard heavy weights is for mass building and lighter (more reps) is for strength and endurance and "cutting down".
What if i want both? build muscle but also cut down, lose some fat....should i mix it up a little? like to heavy weights one week and then more reps the next. anyone know? |

let me get this straight... so light weight is for building strength. hmmmm. And to think, ive been doing it wrong this whole time...
no... weights upwards towards 90% of your 1RM is for building strength... weights that you can do 8-12 reps is for hypertrophy... weights for 20 reps + is for endurance and building the capillaries... weights around 40-60% of your 1RM done for sets of 3 or less at maximal velocity is for speed... As for lifting weight to burn fat, no. Yes, if you build muscle, you will burn fat. But you cant "tone" your arms by doing high reps. You tone your arms by losing the fat. -------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |

oh ok thanks.....so can i mix it up a little - sometimes heavy weights, sometimes lighter if i want both - eg i want strength AND endurance?
p.s man_of_steel what do u mean if i wanna be ripped and build i shouldnt i should go 10-12 reps i thought heavy weights built strength AND mass? huh? sorry im really slow... basically i want to be strong but build muscle as well (and do cardio 2 lose weight)....so should i go heavy, light, or mix it up? |

I suggest you work your body with same number of reps to prevent imbalances....you don't want to squat 100lb for 50 reps and do bench press for 200 for 10...you want to do both exercises at your max of certain reps like 10 ....
change reps how you like but try consistancy wise train whole body with similar reps....whether it's 1-5, or 6-8, or 10-15... Yes you can even go to 1 rep curls...as long as you properly warm up....and know your limits..... To strengthen your muscles, try different techniques, like drop sets, or forced reps, or supersets..etc....but stick with similar reps for all muscles | |

IF your asking if you can go heavy one day and then 3 days later go light for more reps, than yes, but don't expect to make monumental gains in either departement, only mediocre gains in both. As for heavy reps, they condition the CNS more than muscles, so you learn to handle heavier weight. Bodybuilders arent usually the strongest individuals, and powerlifters dont always look that strong...
