i prefer using the smith machine instead of the regular free weights bar ,however someone told me that the later is better ,is that true ?
i use the smith when i'm doing bench presses ,squat ,...etc

It is true as you are hitting the smaller fibres at the same time when doing the free style. And even getting some secondary muscles going.

down the road, free weights drastically helps with endurance and control.

Ageis is right, with free weights, you are forced to use stabilizer muscles also, where the smith or any machine in a set plane will take them out of the work. The smith can be ideal on the bench for breaking past a sticking point for instance piling on the weight and doing partials. Can be beneficial too if nursing a sore shoulder or such. I think you will find that you will not be able to do the amount of weight on the bench (free weights) that you have been doing with the Smith.
