hey,im 14 yrs old, n recently ive been pretty worried about all the controversy over whether weights stunt growth etc. I have no idea which is right as different people say different things. Some say theres no scientific proof etc, while some say it does (for instance my brother whos just finished his 1st year of medicine). Supposing this is true (weights at young age DOES stunt growth), do u think i would be alright doing light weights (say 10-15% of my bodyweight) with high reps. Cuz i have been doing weight lifting along with the healthy diet and HIIT cardio for about 2 weeks and i dont wanna give up weight training completely. Firstly because weight training gives me motivation and a good reason 2 keep 2 a healthy diet instead of junk food all the time, and also if i only do cardio i would break down muscle. My brother told me at my age he focused on improving overall fitness (cardio, sports, etc) and started bodybuilding when he was 15. he's turned out fine, so do u think it will be alright?
I want to keep fit and carry on doing HIIT cardio (to improve fitness and also to lose a little weight) but not lose any muscle. Will light weight training still help keep muscle?
Thanks for your thoughts n help
(p.s ive already fone fitbuddy searches n all and researched stunted growth etc, and would rather hear what people who do think weight lifting stunts growth have 2 say, rather than another argument on whether it does or dosent. Lets say it does, just for the point of my qu. ty)

weight training will not stunt your growth.. continue on as you see necessary. in terms of the light training, i would not opt for that if you are a normal or slight build, as it will be an incredibly slow muscle building process, and will result in more definition than actual growth. training heavy and hard at your age will not present a problem if you want.. the only thing you should be wary of is your supplements. stay away from creatine until you are around 18.

Unless of course you put a couple of 45's on top of your head and stay like that for an extended period of time (like years). Other then that I've never seen any hard evidence to back up the statements that weight training stunts growth. Fact is some people are short...like me...but it's not because of too much weight training I can tell ya that. However that's a good excuse...I'll have to use that one when someone makes fun of my height next time.

thanks 4 the replies..its just that so many people think it does as well as people who think it dosent..my brother told me it does and he would know because he's training to become a doctor...but im not too sure. I just wanna stay on the safe side, hope u understand.
Also i was wondering why exactly people think it DOES stunt ur growth, and if light weights for less amount of time will prevent it..If anyone knows please tell me otherwise i think I'm gonna ask my science teachers and doctor and anyone else who may know. I just really dont want to risk anything as I am already pretty short and so i guess i'll be having a growth spurt soon.
Oh yeah, and by the way if in the end i decide with light weights and lots of HIIT cardio will the light weights stop muscle breaking down? I know i wont build, i just want to be focused on KEEPING the muscle i already have....then i will build when im 15/16 (which isnt too long i turn 15 in 3 months)
Thanks for ur help

just as an aside, Dave Draper and Arnold Schwarzenegger started lifting very young and both are 6'1" or taller. Lou Ferrigno started working out at 14 years old at the height of 5' 9" and grew to 6' 5" - taller then anyone in his family!
i would like to see documented proof that weightlifting stunts growth. it is just a form of sport that specifically focuses on muscle and bone growth and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle. as long as the exercises are being conducted with proper form, there is no risk to you.
