I bought some Designer Whey protien from GNC...
I just started working out Monday, is it safe to start right away? I am 137lbs currently and have 21%BF, I want to get it down to 16%... Is there anything else I should be taking? Thanks! |

Designer Whey is some good stuff, I use to take it until it was discontinued at my usual supplier.
It is safe to start it whenever, but make sure you take it right at the completion of your workout- 1/2 right away, other 1/2 over a 30 minute period. And make sure the shake ends up being about a 2:1 ratio of carbs:protien, even if it means adding in some extra stuff :) Hope this helps. -------------- :Hard work equals great results!: |

I agree with sbroyhill it is perfectly safe to start taking whey now, if your wanting to lose body fat be sure you don't take it after 6, better yet try to do your exercise in the morning. Reason I say that is if you take it late at night you wont have time to burn off the calories and you might gain weight. I don't know how old you are, but if your looking for more you can try to take some form of Creatine, I always reccomend Phosphagen HP. Go to google and do a search for "phosphagen HP review" and go to the www.bodybuilding.com site I think, it's a good site for reviews. Hope it helps, take care.

I would personally stay away from the creatine until after you have been working out for at least 1+ years if not longer... no need to supplement much as a beginner, gain some experience first- then start adding additional supplements if you like after that. However everyone can benefit from a good whey protien shake after a workout, which is why I say it is ok to start that.
So I would recommend staying away from the creatine since you have only been working out since monday :) -------------- :Hard work equals great results!: |

Yikes! I have a problem then if I shouldn't take it after 6pm.
I start my workout about then, no time in the AM. Should I just not take it then? |

It is ok to take it after 6pm when taking it after your workout... would actually be quite beneficial to you. Just make sure you take it immediately after your workout (1/2 of it) and the remaining half sip for about 20-30 minutes following your workout.-------------- :Hard work equals great results!: |

no no no no.. take it after your workout regardless of what time that is. as for the after 6pm thing, i think he was referring to limiting your carb intake late at night, as you dont really need it, and it will be stored as fat. this is all dependent on your schedule however (ie you go to bed at 2am and stop eating carbs at 6pm? i dont think so..) you just have to find what works for you.. just stop taking carbs about an hour or 2 before bed and you should be fine.

Sorry rainnin81, I gave you a little of information that was wrong or not very specific. As bropie said when I said, "dont take it after 6" I meant don't eat a lot of fat and carbs after 6 because it will be stored as fat cause you wont really get to burn it off. If you workout late at night that's fine, I think it's like 30mins after you workout you use most of the protein you eat anyways, cause when you tear your muscle your muscle wants the protein to rebuild so you use most of it anyways. So yeah your fine if you take it after working out anytime. Sorry about the miscommunication.
Also I agree with sbroyhill, I must have overlooked that you just started monday. I didn't start taking creatine until I had worked out for a year. When you first start working out you'll gain muscle easy enough with just a good diet and protein shakes. So yeah, as sbroyhill said stay away from creatine until you've been working out for a year or so. Again, sorry for the miscommunication. :) -Derek |

No problem Derek!
Good to know I am somewhat on the right track. Another mini problem: I live about 15-20mins away from my gym. I only like the whey mixed w/skim milk, is 15-20 mins after still OK? I really don't see how I could keep my milk cold to do it RIGHT after and I already hate skim milk enough cold, warm is out of the question for me! Oh, and is one shake after working out OK or should I add one in the AM and/or before bed? Thanks everyone! |

It's fine to take it 15 mins after I think, try to get it in before 30 mins goes up.
