I'm just starting week 4 of eating/working out program here (weights 5 days/week; +HIIT 3 of those days). In 3 weeks, I've noticed the following, and wanted to ask some feedback:
1) my weight has stayed the same 2) I've lost 1.6% body fat 3) my husband notices my arms look bigger than average (and not in a good way) 4) My thighs have stayed the same size, but I feel more muscle - I want to lose size here, badly 5) I just monitored w/out judging what I ate the first week, and the last two weeks I've eaten a weekly average of: WK2 = 1687 cals - 136/213/33; 32%/50%/17% (p/c/f) WK3 = 1700 cals - 138/222/30; 32%/52%/16% Should I be frustrated? I'm logging everything I eat and hoped to see better results. My goal is to lose weight and balance my upper body with my lower (add muscle upper). What is a good per-week/per-month goal with the BFA loss? Is 1.6% loss in two weeks fair/average? -------------- The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own. - Benjamin Disraeli |

Nikki, I believe what's happening is that you're building new muscle. The new muscle is pushing the overlaying fat out and making your arms and thighs appear bigger. Stay the coarse on your diet and exercise. The fat will lose. Also your profile says you're 5'11". You may not be eating enough. How much do you weigh? My wife is 5'3" and eats more than you!!-------------- If I had a boat, Id go out on the ocean. If I had a pony ; Id ride it on my boat. Very soon Charlie

At 5'11" you should be able to carry that weight and be svelt. Reference Howdiecat, she's around 175 and no fat.
You need to eat more. at 1700 calories your body is in starvation mode and is clinging to fat for survival. I think you need to be closer to 27 or 2700 cals if you're lifting 3x and cardioing 2 or 3x per week. It sounds crazy but it's true. At that low a calorie count you may be burning muscle. -------------- If I had a boat, Id go out on the ocean. If I had a pony ; Id ride it on my boat. Very soon Charlie

Hi,
Charlie has made some very good points for you to follow. But I wanted to add one more thing, remember you didn't add the weight overnight so don't get discouraged at the amount of time it takes to lose it. The great thing is you have lost body fat. You have only been keeping an eye on calories for two weeks and you are in a deficit on those, so go to your nutritional program here and see what it says your caloric intake should be. Also check out the specific diet and nutrition catagory, there is a post there called grocery list for healthy eating. Following that makes it easier when you are shopping, you don't have to guess at what to buy. Good luck, Leslie |

i will justy repeat most of what everyone else said - you are doing great. 1.6% bodyfat loss and no muscle loss! Excellent, keep it up and you will see those arms and legs become defined, it just takes time. I think the calorie recommendations here are sometimes high. base your caloric intake on what you had been averaging before you started and gradually bring the amount up or down from that amount. -------------- Vitality shows not only in the ability to persist but the ability to start over. - F. One positive that you may want to focus on is the loss of bodyfat and the increase in muscle. Gradually you will see a difference but it's not an overnight thing. Keep with it and you'll see the difference.
Try and take front, side and back photos in your gym gear. Then every couple of weeks take another set and compare. You'll see the difference over time. Good luck. |

You and I are in the same boat! I'm so glad I'm not alone. Drop me an instant message and we can have a whining session if you like! 2.5 months on FT training program and working extra hard now to tweek my diet. I gained a few pounds early one, lost them and am exactly where I was when I started. Virtually all of my measurements are exactly the same except I have gained 1" on each bicep/tricep (at least I know I'm doing some thing right with my arms!) My photos look the same and I'm getting MAD!!! So - drop me a line - I'd love to chat! Whatever you do - accept it and don't give up! WE CAN DO THIS!!!! Erika. |
