not alot of choices to choose from there, but here are some brief details for some models. These computers are recommended for staff and students by M.I.T.
http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/hardware/pcadmin.html It looks like If you want a Notebook go with the centrino M and if your looking for a desktop computer go with the pentium 4. |

check out www.cheapstingybastard.com
and www.slickdeals.net it has deals for notebooks from dell....750$ off of 1500$+ notebooks....very good expires 6/14/05.... dell has cheaper comps but HP has better financing...18mo no interest or 12 mo no payments....I am buying comp myself and decided to go with pricier HP because I can pay it off in 18 months....however if you just want to pay right away....go with dell they got good deals now on notebooks and 400$ off from desktops 999+$... | |

i think you should go with neither... i heard dell's repuation has gone down some over the past few years and my cousin also has a dell and it doesnt work too good... and my hp is a piece of junk.... go with a mac (i have a mac os x laptop and i like it more than anything that runs windows:)-------------- ~If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut. |

AMD makes a good chip...and better priced then Pentium. However if you go with Intel, the only one to go with is the Pentium chip.
Only thing I might look at is availability of parts and such from outside of the country. Not sure if AMD is as widely used or delivered outside of US/Canada as Intel brand. Probably not an issue now a days, but a few years back it would have played a much larger factor. |

The advantage with AMD is that it's frequency is slower than Pent, in other words you can compare the two like a cross country runner or a sprinter. AMD is very stable but if you use it for hours and hours (24/7) it tends to heat up a bit(and overcloking is very complex with a laptop and defeats the purpose)!
It really depends on your needs, if you have the $$$ buy a Mac, they're user friendly, and great on the Net. Just make sure that it's running the right electical currency for down where you're going, and try to get one with a double layered burner so that you can use DVS RW that hold over 4 gb of data, for back ups etc. Hope this helps and congrats for graduating! I think all computers have their problems, so I dont think there is any computer that is "the best of the best"-------------- ~If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut. |

I have a dell at work and a dell at home. I have no problems with either one of them...I have to say that I agree with poolmaster totally. I think the way your computer functions long term depends on your knowledge of computers. If you know how to protect yourself on the net and do frequent system maintenance (spelling? menace...) you can control the life of your comp.
And i don't agree with the mac comments. I have never had anything but problems with any mac i have ever used. -------------- Kristi Make it happen!! |
