Hey all,
I am a thrower on my high school tracks team. I am trying to come up with some kind of workout so I can stay in shape throughout the summer, fall and winter. I have no weight equipment at the moment. Does anyone know of anything I can do to keep in shape and possible increase my strength? Thanks
Lita

Do you know if you can get access to equipment or freeweights? if so.. i have some arm exercises that you can probably do... by joining a gym you can get easy access to equip/freeweights:)

I haven't priced those. The closest and proably cheapest place would be Wal-mart. There is no specialized stores around me, I live in a tiny town. Wal-mart like a good 30 minutes away.

welllllllllll umm.. you can try pushups and pullups.. i do those every morning and those'll make your arms stronger... you can also try can curls. Side laterals are good as well i guess and so are dips behind the back. Those are all home workouts to do. I hope this helps!

i'd ask on that 450dolar a year thing.....some places give students/ high school discounts.........if not your school should have a weight room......football players usually have to work out in in in the summer for conditioning....see i fyou can work out there with them

but If you plan on throwing for your school for a while.....maybe even going to college......to be an athlete its gonna take some investment......money and time wise... yoru gonna have to either invest in some weights.....or find a gym.......if it means geting a job...then so be it....welcome to the working world.

bow flex makes a set that you can adjust the weight...by turning a knobe.......or dial......some alos use magnets or somthing......they go from 5 to 55lbs.....for only 2 dbs.......but cost about 300 bucks or so...

any kind of free weights........excercise balls, a bench with adjustments to go up and down....barbell .......list goes on and on.

I personally like bowflex... my friend has some bowflex's at his house and its reallllllly easy to change the weight so my input is that if ur gonna invest in weights.. go for bowflex

If your going to spend the money check ebay. I saw a bunch of ivanko plates dirt cheap. The bowflex is ok but go free weights if you can.

I agree with mmaibohm, I was a thrower for my high school track team as well, free weights work a lot better then the bowflex or any cable machine. Do check ebay far before going to a retail store.

I have never been ripped off on ebay. ALso if your mom doenst want to use her card over the net ebay sellers will take money orders. Using credit on the net is fairly safe especially ebay. Heck at the top of the screen on ebay it says powered by the company I work for. Also good luck on the throwing. I lettered in indoor and outdoor track my best throw was at counties 50 feet.

Also what technique are you going to be using? Back in my day we were only allowed to use the slide. But being the trend setter I was I began to work with the spin.

If you have a military ID and a base is near you, just go to their gym on base, then it is free. That is what I'm going to be doing.

#1 most gyms give dirt cheap deals to students...find out...especially for athletes....YMCAs, etc....

#2 Ebay is fairly safe...buy from reputable sellers with high satisfaction ratings....with numerous transactions performed...

#3 to be good at a specific exercise....you have to practice that exercise day after day....no weight training exercise will translate 100% over to the field...unlike the improved performance in the actual lift after numerous practice....

olympic lifting allows you generate a lot of power...so powercleans/snatch are very effective....

try clap push ups for now....if too easy do with legs raised...vary your hand placement(narrow-triceps, wider-chest, very wide-shoulders)...

do 10-12 sets of 3 reps....of clap push ups....explode as hard as you can on each one....

I train female throwers here at UF. We do a lot of Olympic and powerlifting. We also do some bodybuilding circuits twice a week to keep our body fat% down. I can't write you a plan but I do recommend finding a free weight bar and some Olympic plates. RESEARCH the internet on how to do cleans and snatches properly. Also, learn how to parallel squat properly. Train the heck out of your trunk.
Get a speed ladder and perform foot drills. We do lots of medball work and box jumps too. I can answer any question you send me. I just cannot write you a plan.

The key to throwing is rotation. Like gator said, medi ball work and free weights. The tornado balls are great. I would also suggest getting your hands on a swiss ball as they are perfect for rotation training.
