Well i'm kinda stuck........but I also have a question too.
I think I failed on my squat max other day cause I jumped from box squats into normal style.....cold turkey....so i'll give myself another few weks see if that was the problem. But I did get a new pr on dl of 485....I was hoping for the 5 plates...but I didn't get them. And my workout for bench i'll be maxing on that in 2 weeks and soposly will be 350? I was hoping for a 1350 total by summers end......at my same body weight of 258-260......so I have been eating to maintain this weight......around 3000 calores a day, over 5 6 small meals blah blah..... So finally to my question......usually if I gain 5-10lbs.....my maxes go up.......5-10lbs.....BUt if that keeps up....i'll have to be 300lbs to break 550 lb squat or dl.......so that means more calories 3500 plus......BUt over next few months......i'd like to get rid of some of this "padding".....so I can show the fruits of my labor off......I dont' wanna loose strength....but i'd like my maxes to atleast go up..... So I guess what i'm trying to say ......can I gain strength without gaining weight......cause it seems like i'm stuck at what I can lift at this size...... I'd like to be like some of you 200-230lbs guys who can lift more than me and i'm heavier....? so maintain....and try gain strength? add calories.....gain strength and weight? cut calories.....try gains some strength....may loose some...but loose fat? ?????????????????i'm "STUCK"? -------------- gravity is not a law, only a obstacle |

I think it is more than possible to gain strength without gaining weight, as that is my goal as a grappler. However, it will take a little longer, and will be harder to do than if you were gaining weight. If you start trying to cut, than you have to be very careful, otherwise you will lose strength. Its very hard to get stronger while cutting. Just cut it very very slowly. that and all the other blah blah you spoke of applies doubly, like eating more meals. When im cutting, I try to get at least 100 calories every hour. Sometimes that means sitting in classes eating yogurt throughout the day. I also shoot for 6-9 meals. You already know most of the diet stuff.
Congratulations on your new deadlift pr. 485 is one hell of a pull. And I think you may be right about switching from box to parallel. I try to never completely eliminate regular squats to prevent that. right now, to keep the feel, I do overhead squats after box squats, just so i dont remember the feel of the hole. Try it. Overhead squats might be a good lift for a cheerleader. -------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |

Yep, it's more than possible...
I think you made the mistake of pyramiding to close to your new max....you should have skipped anything in the 30-50lb range near your new max....10lb in deadlift is nothing...so if you skipped 485, you woulad have had 495...when I max out, I do only 1-2 warm up sets, and go straight to my new max.... For squats, try to switch to regular, and do pauses throughout the lift at your sticking points with a lighter weight for 2-3 reps...for a few sets.... | |

First off, congrats on the PR. Try to do some deadlifts standing on a box. 2,4 or 6 inches off the floor to make the range of motion longer. I pulled 465lbs todat 2 inches off the floor and had maybe 5 or 10lbs left in me and I actually lost some weight. I am 212 and I am normally 215-220. I think that losing weight will benefit your deadlift. I found that the lighter I am the more I can pull. Good Luck! Also, check out www.monstermusclemag.com and go the forums section. They have a section all about deadlifts and got some great deadlifters that know there stuff.

well 2 days later I got the 5 plates lol......I pulled 495......struggled but I got it. But i'm confused......well for one my gym 45lb plates are about the size of a regulation 35....cause they are rubber.....so they are few inches lower to ground.....so I pulled 485 with these plates.....with wrestling shoes on.
However yesterday( friday 17th) I Pulled 495.....with normal plates......however in a pair of nike shox.....how is this.....I couldn't move the 495 earlier in the week? -------------- gravity is not a law, only a obstacle |

The normal plates are higher up. When I do thick bar deadlifts, i usually only use 25lb plates on them cuz as a grappler I need that strength through a greater range of motion. Usually when i do that, I pull alot less. As for the shox, I'd avoid them. Good look at breaking the quarter ton. That should be coming soon. Keep us posted. -------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |

They might feel good, but that can be an illusion. I like the feel of feet on concrete, or as close as I can get to it. I started lifting in an old pair of wrestling shoes about 3 months ago and I will probably never go back. Theres what louie simmons says about lifting shoes, "the more expensive they are, the worse they are for lifting. "

lol, you know what i meant. give me a pair of chuck taylors or thin sole wrestling shoes anyday over the latest technological shoe innovations. I've heard alot of praise for barefoot lifting, but I haven't tried it yet.
