At my school we have one of the bear squat machines designed for squats, speed squats and jump squats. I hope you all know what im talking about because i would have a hard time describing it. well anyway the main exercise we're told to do on it are jump squats. im wondering should i use a fairly light weight and jump high or put more weight and barely come off the ground? I've been using more weight but im thinking it might be better to do it the other way.

Is it like a smith machine??? Weight in a rack and the bar only goes up and down?

We had one of thoose in high school. They are used to build explosiveness. They are not really for leg development.

My School has one as well. Use light weight- only about 15% of your bodyweight doing sets of like 3 to 5.

looks like a calf raise machine to me?
I'd do jump squats, with a barbell.....that platform looks kinda small......and the machine will make you stay in a certain plane.
With a barbell be alot safer and more "free"...just liek a jump.....the machien will confine you to that plane of movement. Plus a brabell you have to balance etc.......just like when you get ready to jump.

Yeah, I agree with andrew about using free weights, except that if your not comfortable doing jump squats or speed box squats with a barbell on your back, I'd do them holding dumbbells suitcase style. Just a little safer. Although for building explosiveness I'd rather stick with speed box squats and olympic lifts. Oly lifts build speed, end of story. Not a big fan of machines because they limit your plane of movement.
-------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor.
