I am 48 years old, 5'9" tall and weigh 171 lbs. I went back to working out and eating right about 7 - 8 weeks ago. 5 weeks ago, I cut back drinking wine from every night to one night a week. I do a combination of cardio and weight training 5 days a week, and have yet to see any progress. Should I cut back on the weights and just do cardio for awhile?:(:(

noooooo keep doing what you're doing... for some people result take longer than others. Have you lost any weight? You may have to alter your diet... you may be eating too much and whatever you're burning may just be going right back into your body.

make sure you are REALLY watching your diet - stay within your target calorie intake, no more and no less. As far as your workout routine, make sure you are pushing yourself - meaning if you are just going through the motions you will not see the benefits. Of couse I am assuming things here, but I hope it helps anyway

And more importantly - the first results are usually internal, not external - do you feel better? do you have more energy? ow about your self esteem because you have been so good to yourself and have stuck with something this long?

At 48, it may take a little longer to kick your metabolism into high gear, but don't give up - you didn't get out of shape or overweight in just 7 weeks, did you? Changes are happening in your body, you just can't see them yet!

And - I am with kakaroto - what does your current food intake look like?

It's the same cliche but it's true - everyone's body is different.

Thinner males always seem to say eat more calories which may not be the right answer for you. I'm younger than you, but about your stats, and I have to eat around 1500 cals/day with a good weight training/HIIT routine to loose weight.

You might want to play around with your calorie intake. I couldn't eat more than 1500 to loose weight (1700 was a no-no), and less I didn't feel to well. 1500 seems to be the magic number for me.

What are your goals? Lose fat/gain muscle/both? If so, you're weight may stay the same for the short term. What might help you stay motivated is getting your body fat % and measurements taken.

The real beauty of fitness is finding what's right for YOU. Fine tuning things to your body's needs and finding what your body responds best to.

Join one of the programs here and REALLY COMMIT to it... follow the diet expecially and LIFT THOSE WEIGHTS!

I have seen a HUGE improvement in my strength and energy.. also my body is getting closer to where I want it to be.. but it takes time and alot of hard work, NEVER GIVE UP TILL YOU GET THERE.. and when you do.. re-focus your goals and move forward to more challenges!

Ditto to what everyone else has said... KEEP GOING. I joined the gym on 8/14/05. I go 3 days a week and on my off days I still ride my stationary bike or just walking. I told myself not to expect results right away; and more importantly, not to get discouraged when the weight doesn't melt away so quickly. Just be patient, keep working at it, try to stay motivated. You WILL see results.:dumbbell:

I agree with nikki on this one completely...everyone's body is very unique...so what works for one person may not work for you...you may need to manipulate the numbers to see what works for you....protein/carbs/fats....water, total calories, etc.....being fit means KNOWING your body....

also whenever you go for a run or do weights....remember try to push yourself each and every workout....try to run longer(time) or faster(pace) or longer distance.....whenever you hit the weights try to do 1 more rep or 5 more pounds....etc....because if you jog 30 min a week 3 times....and do weights by doing some curls with 5lb for 3 sets for 2 months you won't get the results...

remember PUSH YOURSELF....but also be reasonable...don't over do it....it's a fine line and you have to learn it...

focus on compound lifts when in the gym...

Squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull ups, rows, dips, etc...if you're doing curls you're wasting your time(not saying this is what you do...but I observe some women in my gym and it's practically all they do)

Ditto with everyone else. I was getting frustrated with my lack of weight loss too. I just decided to change my diet and keep on pluggin' away. I'm going to lower my fat intake and up my carb and protein calories. Have you tried HIIT? It seems to work well with a lot of people.
