Im 15 years old and I play for my highschool football team. I am about 140 lbs and about 10% body fat. I have been lifting light weigts off and on for about a year. I was wondering if it is ok for me to start "powerlifting" to become bigger. I have concerns becuase I've heard that lifting too much weight can damage growth plates. Also my goal is to weigh about 160-170 in a year. Does anyone know what kind of lifting works best for gaining mass at my age? Thanks

Duhh! "Food will make you bigger"; just any food?
Duhh! "Muscle is built from food"; and weight training helps doesn't it?

You just trying to add posts to your collection, or what?

Obviously powerlifting in conjunction with diet makes you bigger. In all honesty what type of food you eat isn't really as important to putting on muscle mass as people tend to think, moreso just for overall health. I used to eat a lot of canned meat and it probably took some years of my life but it didn't stop me from building muscle.

diet isn't that important? what the hell program are you on retro? maybe thats why yoru sqaut is weak.....weither its bodybuilding or powerlifting diet is at least 60%........if your diet isn't good, then you just gonna stall.....and spin your tires in the mud.

Without a good diet, you can only go so far. Comsuming junk food in the begining might work for some people, but in the end you will have to change your diet if you want to progress.

I didn't say diet wasnt important, just that you dont have to get as crazy as seem people seem to think. I try to eat chicken as much as possible but sometimes its just easier to eat red meat. I think consuming enough calories and protein from reasonably nutritous food is more important than focusing on the exact percentage breakdown of what type of nutrients you're getting. Obviously within reason

varun...at 15 I was already doing powercleans, deadlifts, squats and benchpresses......and i'm 2in taller.....nothing is wrong with me i'm very healthy......whats the differance is doing 3 sets of 10...... or 10 sets of 2 or 3.....yes more weight is used..... but volume wise its the same.

If done CORRECTLY he can get bigger and stronger safly. Along with a good clean diet.

Varun,
That would be an in correct statement. Have you ever heard of the lad?(joe ladnier) well he has lifted since a very young age. Actually he was a phenom in his teens. also and is one of the greatsest. Also his daughter taylor at the tender age of 14 can out squat most men. She is at an impressive 345 for a 14 yr old girl!! Train smart and you can lift at any age with in reason. That little 10 yr old tarzan boy I am not shure about though lol.

I started squatting when I was 14 or 15. I didn't even have good form and I still grew 8 more inches.

nutrition and lifting go hand in hand...poor nutrition=poor results....

proper nutrition gives your muscles the needed energy for the workouts and then the building blocks to rebuild the damaged muscle fibers...

lecter that number that tells you the number of posts someone has ....is pointless....who in their right mind wants to pad their post numbers? it's an online forum...if you got something relevant to say then say it...why jump on andrew when he stated something very true...

type of training will direct your body towards a certain direction whether it's to build more muscle, gain strength, gain muscle endurance, function, or whatever else your goal might be...but proper diet is what will ultimately will allow you to get there....
