I've been taking 100% Whey protein for about 3-4 weeks now, I tried it with water and it was horrible. I've been mixing it with 1% milk so it actually tastes pretty decent. Anyway I've read some stuff and heard that the milk protein and whey protein will counter each other and you won't absorb it? Any truth to this at all?

I don't think that there is any truth to that. The only truth is that taking whey protein with the milk will only slow down the absorption of the whey protein which is not what you want post workout. So post workout, take it with water. Any other time of the day it would probably be better to take it with milk. Take it with skim milk if you want to lose all the fat from regular or low fat milk. Hope this helps.

redrider - you may already know it but whey is a by-product of milk.

Mike you are correct that whey is a by product in the making of cheese. Whey is an easily assimilated protein where cassein the largest protein component of milk is slow digesting. Cassein basically form a GELATINOUS ball in your stomach and then breaks down over time. Theory has it that this will delay the absorbtion rate of whey trying to make it through.

So it pretty much sounds like milk with protein as a post workout shake is no good seeing as how the absorption process is slower. So what about it with juice? Does it have the same effect? And is water the only one that seems to be effective after a workout?

Juice would be good to take it with after workout especially if you are insulin spiking. I believe there's a topic in the powerlifting message boards that goes into detail about insulin spiking.

Does Soy milk have the same effect as regular 1% milk? Does it still slow the process of absorption down? And as for what DX said, I guess juice is a good alternative to water on a post workout shake with protein? As the absorption rate is quicker?

Depending on how my day goes diet wise I'll have my bed time protein shake with Skim Milk. Fills me up nicely before bed. Any other time during the day and it's usually with water. Go out and get you a shaker...tastes much better shaken then stirred. There's a movie line in there somewhere.

Strawberry isolate whey with orange strawberry bananna juice is awsome and that will absorb quickly and help with insulin spiking right?

You dont necsasarily need an insulin spike for protein absorbtion. Helps a little. And if nothing is real but pain now. Why dont you just hold your breath and wish for death  (i am telling lars!!)

I take ON Vanilla Cream Whey. I started taking it with skim milk or gatorade because the taste was terrible with water. A strange thing happened though. I started to get sick of the protein with milk because it was too sweet. I have now switched to water and like it even though I thought it was terrible a few months ago. I am also mixing it with maltodextrin which seems to help.
