Hey guys,

I was under the impression that when doing shoulder shrugs, "Jerk up as MUCH WEIGHT AS YOU CAN!"

I am going heavy, but noticed that my shoulders don't go all the way up.
For example, when I'm shrugging 'nothing' or light(er) weight,my shoulder blades are 'close' to my ears. When going heavy, my shoulders look like they barely move, but I feel them working; especially when I hold each time for 2-seconds each.

So is what I'm doing okay, or do I need to get the full range of motion from this exercise to maximize the workout?

Thanks!

With the shrugs go heavy and do the best to you can to touch your ears. Also the holds a peak contraction are a good thing also to further punish them. I usually hold for 10 second when doing shrugs.

You should use a weight that is heavy but still allows you to make the full movement, you can even hold them a litlle longer like mmaibohn said there.

And do not roll the shoulders, shrug them. Try doing the seated with dumbbells, use the short back chair. Get an awesome stretch at the bottom, and takes most of the cheating out of the movement.

Thanks guys! Even though I am a little bummed out I have to drop the weight, at least I know that I will be doing them right.

Thanks again! Peace of mind when performing an exercise makes it easier for me to give it my all.
