I know I'm posting a lot, but I wanted to start a debate on what's the best cardio workout (running, swimming, cycling, rowing, jacking o...oh wait, never mind:laugh:). I'm referring to both safety and fitness level intensity. I say running, because humans were naturally designed for it. On top of that, in the Ironman Triathlon, I think running the marathon has got to be the toughest part of it, don't you?

I think rowing probably burns the most calories...followed by swimming.....
there's no 'best' cardio workout...everyone is different so what works best for them may not work well for you... running is probably the worst of the listed because it places the most stress on the joints.....yet burns less calories than some other low impact/high calorie burning activities...ie.. rowing, swimming, cycling.... | |

There is no such thing as "best" cardio . The ideal program has different sorts of cardio in it.
The things that are good about any exercsie can also be it's problem - for example with running, it is good because the high impact nature increases bone density, but this also can cause joint problems. Rowing is good because it uses the a large number of your muscles - this can be problematic if you're recovering from an injury. Swimming is good because your weight is supported, so helping if you're injured - this means however, you're likely to burn less calories. Cycling is good because you get to see lots of nice men in lycra - this means that...wait, no I can't see any problem there. So that's decided then, cycling is the best cardio  -------------- The path to righteousness is a cycle path |

That does it princesslodgey...I'm off to buy a bike. Now if only I could do my cycling in Scotland..hmmm...
For me running is best simply for convenience, but it is definetly hard on the joints. I think it is always best to do a variety of cardio. |

I kinda meant what is everbody's favorite cardio workout. I personally like running, especially since I've been doing it for so long, and I really like getting the runner's high. For me, if I swim or row for an hour, I don't feel the kind of intensity that I do if I run for an hour or more.

anything but running....i do still run, but i hate it. i like swimming but am terrible at it. i would have to say rowing then, i dont hate it and i'm not bad at it. cycling would be fun if it wasnt on a stationary bike. i find those to be alright but get boring, to me anyway.

I avoid most high impact cardio movements like running.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

I know this might be a dumb question but, is runner stairs less high-impact then running on the track?

To a degree... However, despite being relatively low impact, running stairs puts a lot of stress on the patellar tendons of your knees.
I, like BB1, prefer low impact and full body cardio, as opposed to running... Conditioning drills wrestling/grappling swimming tabata My favorite conditioning exercise is 15 minutes of Greco Roman Wrestling with mouthpiece in. Its enough to make most people quit after a minute or two, but at 15, standing up is difficult. -------------- The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. ~~~Hunter S. I heard that cross country skiing is one of the best cardio activities. It burns lots of calories because you use your entire body (same with swimming, but you're fighting a lot more gravity and friction) , not to mention your body is burning lots of calories because its so freaking cold lol.
Then again you have to go to a horribly wretched place like here in Wisconsin during the winter. |
