hi everyone,
I have been getting migrains lately. I am on the patch for birth control, could that be the major cause of them? |

Ask your doctor if that is a side effect of the patch.
migraines can be triggered by many different things - allergies, food allergies, additives, chemical sensitivity, overexertion... try keeping a food and activity journal and note when you have migraines - maybe you can narrow it down to certain foods or situations. -------------- It\'s easier to go down a hill than up it but the view is much better at the top. -Henry Ward Beecher |

hi nicole!
i have suffered from migrains for a few years now. in a different post you stated that you are your husband argue a lot...after several visits to a neurologist(sp?) we found my migrains were stress related. but like asimmer said, they can be for a lot of different reasons. i kept the headache journal, went through a series of tests and questions. i have been put on 'migraine prevention' medicine. (knock on wood:)) i ahve had one migraine since april 12th. as apposed to on to two a week, that's awesome. the prevention medication i am on is a low strength anti depressant. so far so good. how often do you get them? do you notice anything that usually triggers them or do they just come out of 'nowhere'? what do you do to get rid of them? as for being a side effect of the patch...i don't believe migraines are but i know headaches are and believe me there is a BIG difference between a headache and a migraine. jope this helps...let me know if i can help you in any othet way... kristi |

hi kristi-
for the last few years i have always had headaches occasionally but recently i feel real sick, can't look at lights and noices seem so much louder than they really are. When i get them i have to just lie down and try to sleep it out. i had went to the doctor a while ago and he said that it was probably just sinuses so he gave me some med. but it doesnt make them go away. now i am taking exedrine migrain. that usually does it. i just get them all the time. at lease 2x week. about knowing what causes them, i have no idea. i bet they could be ocming from stress like you said. it seems like there are so many things that you would not know about someone until you are married to them.:) But i love him with all my heart!!lol i am about to start college and my parents have moved away. i mean now that i think about it, there are a lot of things that stress me out right now. maybe i need to just relax and maybe go ask my doctor about the headache prevention stuff you suggested. -------------- Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did. -Newt Gingrich |

i definately would do that. actually i jinxed myself yesterday and ended up with one. i have a prescription for something called Maxalt. ask about that. they are these little pills that dissolve on your tounge and they really do dull the migraine pain alot.
my mom suffers from them more than i do. she has much more severe ones than i do. so i'm going to tell you the few things i do know about them... the reason for feeling sick...your digestive system 'shuts' down so to speak and if you've eaten anything right before the migraine or during it, chances are you'll either be sick to your stomach or praying to the porcelin god a few times. the light, the noise...i even have a problem with the heat. when i have a migraine, i don't care what time of year it is, i have to be freezing. my ac gets cranked right into my face so may head face is so cold its numb... i used to swear my mortin, then motrin migraine, then excederine, then excedrine migraine...then aleeve came about. i swear by that stuff still. only real aleeve. that generic naproxin is crap. the cvs brand, walmart brand, they all suck. try this...i had my mom try it but it didn't work for her. but this is what i do. at the first sign of the migraine i take 4 aleeve (yes i know you are only supposed to take one but screw the bottle, i take 4) i can tell the difference between a migraine and a regular headache from where the pain is. mograines in and above the left eye and only there. all other headaches on the right side. so i take the aleeve, make yourself an ice pack. (i usually dump two trays of ice in a towel and wrap it up with a scrunchie) go into my room where it is totally dark, make sure the ac is on and the fan is blowing right in my face. lay down so that the area where the migrine is is laying on the pillow. like line come on the left side, i lay so the left side of my head is on the pillow, the little bit of pressure helps. rest the ice pack right on your head where the pain is. close your eyes and think about nothing but sleep. the reason the ice works for me is because all a headache really is, is swollen blood vessels. the ice helps to numb the pain and cause the vessels to constrict, this relieves some of the pain allowing you to fall asleep. 49 times out of 50 this works for me. i hope it works for you too. when i wake up the headache is gone. i know that bulima is a serious issue and i am not bulimic, but i will say this. sometimes that sick to the stomach feeling is so awful it prevents you from falling asleep, make your self throw up if you aren't throwing up on your own. i've never even really had to stuck my finger down my throat, just sitting on the bathroom floor thinking about it usually works for me. lol |

ah and as far as getting to know someone...i have been with my boyfreind for almost 4 years and we still learn about each other everyday. marriage is tough, but when 2 people love each other, it can be the greatest thing in the world. work it out...you know you can
maybe he just doens't know how to communicate his feelings. i know that in the beginning eric and i couldn't communicate verbally. for the first 2 almost 3 years all we did was argue and fight. we started writing to each other, or talking about what was wrong over the phone. sometimes its easier for people to honestly and openly communicate what they are thinking and feeling when the person they are talking to isn't right in front of them. i am proud to say that eric and i have a wonderful relationship because we learned how to communicate with each other and it definately wasn't an easy chore. but he we are, not getting married anytime soon, but looking to buy a house together and raise our 4 kids together. (i have 1, he has 3...all girls!!!) good luck and if you need anything or just want to talk...i'm just a message away... -------------- Kristi There are no endings, only new beginnings |

Sorry, just read this post
The oestrogens in the combined contraceptive (whether oral or patch) can DEFINITELY cause migraine. If you have ordinary migraine then you should discuss with your doctor whether to continue or try a different form of contraception. If you ever get any other funny things happening when you get your migraine, like seeing zig zag lines, or any weakness or pins and needles in your body, you will probably need to stop the patch completely (but discuss this with your doc and make sure you are using another form of contraception if you stop) Because it is the oestrogens which predispose you to migraines, progesterone only contraceptives, like the implant or the jag are okay to use. |
