I've decided to get back into shape after a 3 month layoff of exercise. I have put on some fat that I REALLY don't like. However, I also want to bulk up because I am skinny and have always been a hard gainer so I just worked out for the health benefits in the past.
My question is, should I go for the building muscle or the burning fat first? I really don't like my belly and want that gone first. Is that a good approach? I'm probably about 20% fat if not more. Yet I'm skinny. the worst of both worlds. I want the best approach for maximum results. Plus, if I bust my ass every day for a month, what headway do you think I will see? |

gotta focus on one or the other to see results faster....
do cardio 3-5 days a week of 30 min with progressively higher pace.... do 3 days of full body compound lifting... if you do a lot of cardio and eat well....you'll likely see some results in a month...10lb drop...possibly... take fish oil to prevent some of the muscle loss during dieting... | |

1. WHat do you mean by full body compound lifting?
2. Should I lift intensely during a cut phase since I haven't really been lifting regularly for a few months? I mean, should I workout as I would if I were looking to gain (ex. do bench AND flies AND pushups etc. or squats AND lunges AND leg curls etc.) since I won't be able to put on any muscle? Or should I just stick to the basics like bench and squat? |

Really? OK, so just do the primary exercises and don't worry about the supplements? Should I do them more than once each a week? Like bench and squat 2-3X a week?
Plus, I just joined a gym so how often should I be going? (not including cardio as i have a treadmill) |

So basically I can go to the gym once a week, do bench, squats curls and rows and that's it for the week other than cardio?

no no no. You should split up the days that you do the bench squats deadlifts and all that. And still do the cardio yes.

But if I'm just gonna do the core exercises, won't i then be going to the gym for just ten minutes a day? I mean, I go and do the bench then leave? Next day, I do, do squats, then leave?
I'll do it if that's what needs to be done, but I figured if I'm just doing one exercise per body part, I could do them between 1-2 days. |

But is there a point do doing all that if I'm not going to be buiding muscle or strength?

Yes there is a point, and you will build muscle and strength.
Ten minutes in a Gym? How many reps are you doing per set? How many sets are you doing per exercise? |

Here's the thing. I'm on a cutting routine and I haven't worker out in like three months. I wanna rid the fat around my waste. Everyone says that you CAN NOT build muscle and strength during a cutting phase. This is why I'm asking how much I should really be concentrating on weights since I apparently won't agin anything from doing them. Granted, it may help from burning off muscle, but I probably don't need to work out with a bulker's routine to do that.
In a perfect world, I could cut fat and build muscle simultaneously, but since most people say it's impossible, I have to go with one over the other. Since, I'm choosing fat burning, I'm wondering how much weight training I should be doing. I mean, If I go in and exercise like I was bulking (do bench, inclines, declines, flies etc.) then my body will already expect that workload and I will have to bust my ass twice as hard during my bulk phase, right? |

You can build muscle while cutting... you might not be able to bulk up, but you can add lean muscle. While cutting, do high reps/ lower weight (if it gets too easy, you can add more weight). You can also add muscle endurance by training to failure. You need to work your muscles, especially if you want to keep them. Try cardio circuits too... they will get your heart rate up while you lift.
If you don't use it, you lose it! |

My apologies, as I was a little vague.
I do have muscle tone. I still have a lot of bulking to do though. I took three months off of training and I have bodyfat upwards near 20%. I wanna burn that off, yet I also wanna build some muscle, yet I keep hearin that's impossible. I guess my question can be summed up like this: Soldierbone posted above that I cannot bulk up, but that I CAN ADD lean muscle during a cutting phase. Is this true? (If it is true then I will do enough exercise to build muscle. If it's not, i will just do enough to maintain muscle.) |

Ok, cool. I thought Bench and inclines/declines etc. were basics. Is there a list of the primary exercises I should use?
Also, is it a fact that I can gain muscle and reduce bodyfat simultaneously? There is a constant debate about this on this site, with more people leaning towards the 'no you can't' side. |

This kind of changes the topic but you might want to check out bb1fit's post in the supplement forum. I don't usually push supplements but this cAMP is some pretty phenomenal stuff. I did a mini cut (although fairly extreme) and lost almost two inches on the waist but added an inch in mass to my chest with a heavy wokout routine but I was stacking it with creatine and a lean diet. I've been able to do that before but never this easily.-------------- Mike in Pensacola Now. |
