OK so I hear that your muscles heal while you sleep and your body doesnt hold protein for long. So this leads me to think that waking up at night and drinking a protien shake would be a good idea if your hardcore. Is this reasonable? Or just too much?

hehe.. some people resort to that, but i think the majority dont. having a casein based meal before bed will be your best bet. it will provide a slow, steady supply of amino acids to keep your muscles in a state of positive protein balance. add in some ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil to slow digestion even more. a protein shake then, some cottage seed and ground flaxseed (my fav), glass of milk, etc. would probably suit you fine.

Actually, protein doesn't just turn into protein. When your body eats protein, it first breaks apart the amino acids in the food you eat. It then will reform the amino acids to make its own protein. Therefore, I don't think drinking before sleep would do much other than make you not sleep as good because you're digesting.

z...the idea for having a protein based meal before bed (I usually get a whey protein mixed with milk before bed) is it prevents catabolism while you sleep. Your bodies gonna be processing and fuctioning whether your sleeping or not. If you get something in it before you sleep it's at least going to keep processing protein that I give it rather then from the muscles. I have missed my protein shake at time, cause I dosed off or whatever, and have never noticed a difference in my quality of sleep with or without.

Recently read article which related to top body builder (name eludes me) who has a 24hr cycle. Whereby he sleeps 4 hours, has meal, trains, sleeps 4 hours, has meal etc. This means he was sometimes up at 4 am to eat..stay up for a few hours and then back to bed. This is obviously his proffesion and quite extreme but results for him were good. Not exactly practicle for normal people.
