Do 'powerful' exercises...
squats, deadlifts, power cleans, train abs HEAVY(doing heavy sit ups, russian twists, wood chops, etc)
I never consistantly train my abs..i go months a lot of the time between doing any ab exercises...and still have a good 6pack...even more so than my friends who train just their 6pack...why? deadlifts and squats...

Overhead squats. My favorite torso exercise. Try them, and once you get up there in weight, you will really feel it. I have a well defined six pack and very strong abs, but most of my ab work does not involve bending my upper body towards my lower body, like the tradition of crunches, sit ups, and leg lifts. Instead, most of my ab work is done through exercises requiring a great deal of stabilization of the torso, such as overhead squats, deadlifts, and full contact twists.
Think about it... Look at the guys in the gym doing sit ups everyday in pursuit of a stronger midsection: Do you really think that the reason they haven't achieved this goal yet is because they aren't doing ENOUGH sit ups, crunches, etc.????
Like menace said, squats, deadlifts, cleans. I would even recommend the snatch over the clean just because it requires more trunk stabilization in the finish, and ends with working out of the hole with a weight overhead. If that doesn't give you "powerful" abs, then I doubt crunches will...

well thats easy. dont do as much as you back squat. when i started doing overhead squats, i only used the bar. now i do 135*3. work up slowly, and be weary of your shoulders.
