I've searched the forum abit on this exercise. I'm wondering what muscle group this exercise is supposed to target? Because i find that I'm doing sit ups while pulling on my arms - is this right? Or should I be trying to keep my back flat as a board and lift my torso up with my feet as a sort of falcrum. Any help on this one would be great.
Thanks so much!

It may just be me but I can't picture what you're trying to do. Originally thought you meant dips but I can't see how you can get in a situp position doing that. If you really mean chins, I'm curious how big your chairs are. :)

I was just talking about the exercise in the fitness program where it says to lie flat on the ground grasping onto a horizontal pole that is say a chair's seat height. Then using both hands it says to pull your chest up to the pole and then let yourself down again.
My question is should i be using my abdominals when i do this, b/c thats what i find myself doing.. or is this exercise supposed to focus on the arms.
Anyone's input would be apprectiated. Thanks

I think that one is for your upper back... focus on that... the arms will be worked, but it's the back that is the main area worked there. Bend at the waist when you are raising your upper body.
Hope that helps...

Nope... they will likely be used to some extent, but it's more of a back exercise...

Here's the description from FT:
Primary Muscles: Upper Back
Secondary MusclesBiceps: Rear Deltoids
Movement Execution:
1. Place two chairs about 4 feet apart. Put a broom-stick between the two chairs, resting on the seats.
2. Lie down on your back under the stick and grab the stick with a over-hand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width.
3. Keeping your body straight, pull yourself up to the stick such that your upper chest is close to the stick, in a slow controlled motion. Be sure to focus on flexing your upper back muscles as you pull yourself up, and to squeeze at the top for 2 seconds.
4. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat.
FreeTrainers.com Helpfull Hints:
Focusing on the muscle group you are training is the key point during a workout. You can practice squeezing your back muscles by pulling your arms back at different levels as done in this exercise. Get to know which way you feel the best tension in your muscles and use that while doign the exercise.
