When is the best time to drink my protein powder, before or after my workout? I usually work out in the evening about an hour before my 5th or "dinner" meal. I know I need some dextrose/maltose after a workout but do I also need protein? Keep in mind that I usually go to bed about 2 hrs. after my workout. I hate working out so late in the evening but that's what works for me. Also what is a good source of dextrose or maltose food wise?

yes.. protein powder is a must after working out. your muscles have been microtorn.. and the protein will go to work rebuilding them immediately. try 1/4 of your bodyweight in grams (ie 200 lbs = 50 gr) as a starting point.
for postworkout sugar, you could just buy malto and dextrose. they're very cheap on the internet.. check bodybuilding.com or i think vitalgo.com has it too. gatorade is a good source of dextrose too.

personally, i prefer to mix malto and dextrose with my protein powder in my postworkout shake.. tastes alot better than mixing protein powder and gatorade. i guess chocolate and fruit punch just isnt my thing... :)

in my other post I was told to take 3 parts carb to 1 part protein. is this good for post workout? if not what ratio of carb to protein should I take?

depends on your goals. right now i'm 1/4 dex, 1/4 malto, and 1/4 protein in grams per lb bodyweight. if you're looking to gain more, you could up your carbs to 1/2 bodyweight.
