Ok, I am 34 and am in the best shape of my life. Heart checks out fine (blood pressure, resting heart rate). Bodyfat= 6.6%. 5'6" 145lbs. I am concerned that I am doing too much for my age. I lift 5 times a week, run three times a week, aerobics twice a week, and cardio (elliptical, stationary bike) 5 times a week. On the 24th I am attending a three week, 8-hour/day martial arts training session. Am I in danger of working myself too much? I don't feel overtrained, as I am not noticing any strength loss or fatigue. Is it possible to workout so much you put yourself in danger of a heart attack or something like that? Just curious. What are the dangers of working out too much, other than overtraining?

depends on the intensity....

for example moderate weight lifting is fine 5 days a week....

cardio of elliptical 5 days a week at mod intensity is also fine and it's easier on the knees than running...aerobics twice a week is good even at a high intensity......

martial arts for 3 weeks? 8 hours a day? now that's pretty close depending on what you do...I mean if you sit and watch instructor half the time or if you do some non-contact low intensity drills perhaps it's fine also...

over the years you should ahve developed a 'feel' for how you're feeling and adjust activities accordingly...I applaud you for staying so active and fit....you're in amazing shape...

do you have any history of heart trouble? your close blood relatives?...

You can try taking Fish Oil 5g a day, 2 in the morning 2-3 at night...helps fight inflammation of tissues....

working out too much ....ie overtraining can have a myriad of symptoms....loss of interest in things you enjoy, fatigue, loss of strength, etc...

No history of heart disease, that I know of. When I lift, it is with a lot of intensity, but light weights. I have given up the fantasy of being Arnold and such. The martial arts will be pretty much 5-6 hours of continuos work with a few hours of observation. It is for my job, so it is kind of necessary. I feel fine when I work out, no matter what the activity, just don' want to drop dead of a heart attack. I know there are people older than I who do more, like Ironman comps and all. I guess, I feel like a twenty one year old in a 34 year old body. Just want to make sure it is ok to keep going with what I do! Thanks for the input!

I think you're fine in terms of lifting....you might be pushing it cardio wise...but it seems like you're able to recover from all of the strain so i think you should be fine...just do the basics like eating well and getting plenty of sleep...

try taking ZMA and Fish Oil capsules might definitely be helpful....

good luck

Thanks for the advice. It is always nice to hear from experienced people on matters of fitness. I will just continue my regimen and hope for the best. I am always on the lookout for things like overtraining and the like. I am looking to maybe reduce my aerobic activity, as I do it about 11 times a week. Some of it is low intensity but most of it is "balls out". I find it hard to halfway do things when it comes to working out. Thanks again and happy training!!
