Hi folks, thought I'd follow all the other new member leads and intro me.
I'm a long winded writer, just a warning..lol.
I am a former smoker. I did it 18 long years. About 3 months ago I quit and have picked up on the idea of getting and keeping fit and healthy. I am, for now, overweight, and have about 70lbs to drop. I've been exercising and lifting weights without direction for about 6 weeks to some benefit, but it caused additional weight gain with an increased appetite. So I was double whammy'd(stop smoking and increased appetite from working out.), hadn't changed my diet. I probably didn't gain as much as if I had just not worked out, but nonetheless.
Sooo..now, I am doing the exercises and weight lifting recommended via this site, so far so good, but even more importantly, I'm following, not a diet, but a different approach to what I eat. I've done some investigating what was healthy, what was nutritious, what was going to help me stay full but lower weight. I'm not a picky eater. I've been at it for just over 2 weeks and have lost 10lbs and am fitting into pants I didn't fit in a month ago.
I don't really have a weekly goal, other than to continue as I'm currently doing. I'm assuming that the longer I do this..the longer I'll do this. The whole thing is tripping my pregnant wife and her family all up. I get mildly mocked at what I eat by them all in good fun, but I just don't think they get it. So you know, her family are failed dieters(I don't believe in diets, they are temporary and simply invite failure) and picky eaters so the veggies and fruit, lean meats, and legumes aren't on their diet.
I'm a little worried about how I'm going to fare through the holidays being with the in-laws but I won't budge from what I'm doing so I guess that’s that.
Sorry for the long post, but I honestly love to write and chat about this and could continue, but am cutting this short so you can go about your day.
thx for reading.

Sounds to me like you've got it together. The holidays are still a ways away and I'll bet you'll make such good progress between now and then that you'll be motivated to stick to your plan. It's also OK to indulge every once in a while-we like to call it a cheat day or cheat meal, plan for it and just make sure you get right back on plan. Welcome to FT and good luck with your goals!

Thank you, Fly. I think I might have made too much of the whole holiday thing. Its a minor concern.
I've noticed that there seems to be some back and forth about cardio and weights, 1 side says that seperate them by days, other than a little warm up. If you put into the "fitness plan" that you would like to add cardio, it suggests I do mine after lifting for 25 or so minutes. I'll have to read some other posts about this but the confusion is there.

The general consensus here is to separate your cardio and wt training days. Cardio one day, Wts the next, each 2-3X/week. Personally, I do wts M,W,F and cardio T,TH,Sat. If you have to do them on the same day due to scheduling, then try and separate them by 6-8 hours-say one in the morning and one in the evening. If you have no other choice but to do them at the same time, then your correct to do wts first followed by cardio--but only as a last resort. Also, you always want to warm up before wt training with some light cardio, say 5min on a treadmill, just to get the blood flowing and your heart rate up from resting. Hope this helps...a fitbuddy search will elaborate more...good luck.
