I have been on a low carb diet since Jan 2005. I have done very well on it losing just over 50 lbs. I was not lifting at all threw that phase of the diet just dropping as much body fat as I could. But now that I am trying to build a little size but more Lean muscle. Can I still restrict carbs and build the muscle? There are days were I am still at only 20-30 grams of carbs. All my carbs are complex carbs I have totally cut out simple carbs.

Carbs are not the enemy they are made out to be. It is type of carbs, timing, etc. One nasty little thing about low carb diets for prolonged periods of time. Yes, they work. But(always a but), can lead to carb intolerance for instance. That is whenever you start to eat carbs again at all, you can blow up very quickly. Ease back in...carbs are essential for muscle gain, as are healthy fats. 20-30 gr. of carbs will not cut it for muscle gain.

Great Thanks bb1fit. I will try to add slowly then. I was thinking of adding frozen yogurt to my protein would that be a good way of adding more carbs. Or should I go up by little increments. Say adding 10 grams a week kind

I do not know when frozen yogurt became a health food! It is notoriously high in sugar. Simple carbs are the last thing you want to reach for. Keep them fibrous, and complex. Beans, black eyed peas, etc. for instance are an ideal addition, high in fiber, tons of B vitamins, anti cancer properties, loaded with antioxidants.

So DX you recommend eating about 1,600cl a day rather than do Atkins and after losing 25lbs (should take about 6-8weeks) slowely increasing carbs? One things I should note is I have a low tolernce for carbs in the first place...never really ate them and it's because I started eating them (and then couldn't stop) that I gained 30lbs. I think I have enough muscle from the working out now--that if I lose some in the next 2 months, I can easily rebuilt... what about eating alot of protein (?)---won't that keep my muscle strong? Ohh--thank you for the feed back.

Well I have researched healthy eating and exercise extensively. At my best I was 5'8 and 130lbs--size 4--worked out 6days a week. I gained 30lbs due to unhealthy eating and less activity. Now I want to lose weight--my primary goal---and then rebuild the muscle I lost AFTER I get to my goal weight. I know about Atkins and after just cutting back my carbs for a week lost 4lbs. My question is:
If I start Atkins--and continue working out with the intensity I do now---adding HIIT--will I loss that much muscle? I sit for at least 10hrs a day at work---so I have mad energy to spend at gym.
Also when I am at my goal weight--can I slowely add more carbs less fat to equate to a healthy diet as prescribed on this website without gaining any weight (I'll do it real slow if that's what it takes) Or am I stuck at eating 70-150carbs till I die?
Last question---the ideal carb intake in the first two weeks is 25IMPACTcarbs... and you can eat as much fat/processed low carb food as u like, as long as I stay close to my calorie goal prescribed at 2,500. True? Yes, I am getting the Atkins book...
Would it just be better to eat a balanced portion and exercise---I'll have cut my calories way back though to lose the same amount of weight I want to lose doing Atkins. Remember first goal lose weight---from their maintain and build muscle, I know you can't do both at the same time.
P.S. anyone know of a good free Atkin meal plan website. Perhaps a 7-14 eating guide---
