Ok, this will probably stir a little controversy, but most of us here know not to read much into these. This post is geared more towards those members alway posting asking opinions on some routine they found in the latest issue of some magazine with a roided up bodybuilder on the front.
A lot of times, these members are under the impression that they are following a routine by some champion bodybuilder. However, believe it or not, few if any of the articles supposedly written by the governator ever actually saw arnold's pen. Oftentimes, a magazine will pay a fitness celebrity to use their name. The magazine will then "ghost write" a training article and then claim it is training advice direct form said celebrity. Usually, the closest thing to a CSCS that the actual writer has is a degree in journalism. Thats right, you may have been taking exercise advice from someone that works in a cubicle, has a pencil neck, and often times has real fitness experiance. Another reason to doubt these magazines, is that even when hey ARE recieving credited advice from a real world source, this information is sometimes manipulated after submission. For example, one extremely popular mucle mag recently released an article by doctor John Berardi, a premier fitness expert and nutritionist, and an experianced powerlifter. Now, in this article, Berardi supposedly recommended a chocolate milk PWO. This doesn't make a lot of sense, so a member on a forum that berardi frequents questioned this. Here was berardi's response: "I recommended Surge. They took it out and replaced it with chocolate milk. That's what happens in publishing sometimes. There's nothing you can do. I guess choc. milk is better than nothing..." And so, maybe this will help some of the members as to understand why I always say to question everything, and furthermore, be wary of what you read. -------------- Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions??? If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |

Here's the latest in muscle and fitness:
Arnold's ghostwriters take overtraining to a new level. For the first workout of the week, "Arnold" recommends a 45 set (seriously) chest and back routine that'll take four hours to complete and four weeks to recover from. Also, for females trying to avoid blocky abs but get a toned midsection, they recommend lowering the resistance and doing higher reps. -------------- Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. Thats why I started this thread. In the powerlifting forum, guys are always asking for some routine from some magazine, and what people think about it. Not only is it not powerlifting, but its bull. I agree with you Ron, there is much better info on sites like this one.-------------- Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions??? hmmmm. Thats what they're calling powerlifting now? Wow. And I thought the purpose of powerlifting was to build maximal relative strength in the big 3.
I dunno, I've been to powerlifting meets, and I have never, NEVER seen someone squat with close stance. Medium stance AT THE CLOSEST, wide stance normally. Calf raises? Are you serious? 8,6,4? It makes me want to crawl into a squat cage and cry. -------------- Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions??? The squat cage is holy ground. Neither 1/4 reppers can stand to be there long nor the ones that insist that 30lb bb curls need to be done in the cage. -------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Yeah, I like to use it for rest/pause curls, but if someone wants to squat, by all means I do them elsewhere.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

I don't curl, so I have no need to do them in the squat rack.-------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

So then you post here about a mass, not a strength routine, and then you post in the powerlifting forum about getting stronger and faster as an athlete. Prioritize. And in answer to your question, if you can by the routine at a stand at the airport, then its probably outdated, poorly written, and generally ineffective.-------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

You guys are funny. I guess I'll stop buying my magazines. I think more then anything I read them for the success stories and at this point nothing else. Sometimes it motivates me to keep moving! I have to confess I read one last night. They featured an article on a workout for pregnant women; however the pictures of lady doing these exercises wasn't pregnant!
Anyways, I have to agree, they aren't much help and have already taken up too much of my time! |
