I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right section or not, I'm new here. Anyway...
A long time ago, my friend recommended that I use a protein powder to lose weight. He was really into body building, etc. I haven't seen him in a few years... and 2 kids later, I don't recall our conversation enough.
My question is - how do you use the protein powder? Is it a meal replacement? An in-addition-to your meal? Of course there's nothing on the labels that tells you specifically how to use it - just how to make it.
TIA!

Use it in the morning before breakfast...mix a scoop or two...with milk or water.....use blender if u need to...u can also take it hour before gym or directly after working out....and before sleep...in other words pretty much at any time....it serves the purpose of getting protein to your muscles faster than normal food...and that is most critical especially right after working out....and less so at other times...

Just remember that it is a suppliment and not a meal replacement. It'll help get more protien into you, but you're still better to get most of your protien from natural sources such as chicken, tuna, fish, etc. As you should gather from menace's post, it is a great support to working out, but not really a "diet" aid. Just want to make sure you're clear on that!

If your eating 6-9 meals daily, then it can be a meal replacement. Provided you absorb some carbohydrates, it is an excellent alternative for people that are short on time and can't fix 6 small meals a day.
If you are dieting to lose weight, than take it after working out, and in between meals to keep your metabolism running. It is more so a snack than a meal, but then, if your eating often enough, most of your meals may seem like snacks.

Good points wrestler. I know a number of women that use protien powders like they would "slimfast", so I just wanted to insure that hannamae wasn't thinking of it in those terms. On occation I guess I use it as a "meal replacement" for my afternoon "snack" when I know I'll not be getting my dinner until later because of a fitness class.

Do they have tasteless powders?
Do you have to mix the powder with milk or water? Mixing it with yogurt would be better for me instead of making a "shake."

I would suggest using an MRP if you plan to use it as a meal replacement. Pure whey protien for instance will not give you the nutrition you need, plus digestion is very quick, thus gastric emptying, and you will actually be hungry in a very short time period. This normally leads to binging, which will exasperate instead of help the problem. Whole foods is of course your best bet, but in a hurry, there are some decent MRP's out there now.
