Ok, so I have 3 friends. Yes, a total of 3 friends. so anyways, these three friends all weight lift. I'm at the gym when they appear, right as I am finishing my workout. I stay and watch them bench. Two of them load the bar to 145. They do a set of 7 each, struggling to finish.
The first one flairs his elbows, and brings the bar to his upper chest. His eyes are on the bar the whole time, and his head comes off the bench everytime he touches his chest. The second one has no motor control. The first rep is elbows in, the second is 1 elbow in, the third is all over the place. He bounces the bar, and the weight is clearly to heavy for him to learn proper technique and to do for that many repetitions. They tell me they work till they can do a weight 10 times, and then add 10lbs, and work up again. This is their training. The third gets on the bench with 105lbs, lays back, unracks the bar, and does 5 of the best reps I have seen. Not powerlifting style, no arch, but still excellent form. He likes to do a Siff style 5*5 routine. He tells me he knows his form because when he was playing sports, he USED to lift, and he learned proper form then. I'm taking bets. I would put almost anything up that by the end of the (school) year, friend 3 is bench pressing AT LEAST as much as friends, if not more. That gives us until the end of June. Now thats a large increase. But I am confident that in this position, technique and training will reign over brute force. Any takers? -------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

I will take brute force. Cause the stronger fella can learn better form and still be ahead. The weaker while better form has a lot to catch up to.-------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! The Men and Boys are Separated by one thing: The Squat Cage! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

Depends on how the guy eats. You can weightlift perfectly but if you're skinny and don't eat well it won't do a lot. I think you're right though, I'll be the kid is benching at least 135 anyway.

He may not be benching more weight, but I be he will develop better. I have a friend I work out with alot, and he outweighs me by a good 20 lbs. I guess he thinks due to this he should be stronger than me, and tries hard to match my set.
I end up doing curls spotting him! I finally convinced him to not try to impress anyone, drop his weight and actually work his chest. Guess what? He is now finally starting to develop a nice chest muscle. I explained to him, when you leave here(the gym), do you ever see any of these guys? Why do you care what they think. Wouldn't you rather develop your chest and look good with a shirt off, have folks notice you outside the gym? Ego is dangerous, and oft times results in long time away from the gym. -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

Excellent point BB1. This is something a lot of trainees have to get over.
You may be right mutt, but my bet is that neither one of these guys WILL learn technique, as they didn't seemed that concerned when I commented. That, and I continually see people in the gym with the same horrible technique, and it never gets any better. Not only that, but the style of training is better. Working up to 5*5, or working up to 3*10, with the occasional horribly done negative. So whats the good word then mutt? What are we putting up? -------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

The only animal I can keep on campus is a fish. As is, I am having to sneak in the chinchilla.
I couldn't put my dog up. He is my running partner in the summer. What else we got? -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

I'd say a big strong guy with poor technique can correct his form easier than a scrawny little guy who has flawless form....although I was on the scrawny side and have progressed well...I consistantly see these huge guys lifting like a bunch of little pu$$ies....these 6'-6'6+ 300lb+ NFL looking players who do like the lightest workouts ever....and have terrible form...I know well that given improvement in their technique and improved lifting program...they would outlift me within a couple of years...their sheer size is enough......the sad reality....hard work can accomplish a lot but we are still limited by our genetics/bodies....

I could get you the numbers if you wanted. I know the athletic directors and the guy that supposedly runs the field house. Just can't say that we hire many PT's, but I'm sure they are hiring for something.
And Mutt, I'm a college student. No money and no job for the next 5 years. -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. If you can still walk, then you can still run. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |
