Hi everyone,

I've been reading everything I can find here on Creatine and if I've missed a post relating to my question, I apologize in advance.

I've been taking Creatine Monohydrate for about a week and a half. Besides gaining 5 lbs. (and some inches) in 1 week, I've also been suffering from another rather nasty side effect - the dreaded gas! The weight gain was bad enough without that.

I was just wondering if any other women have suffered from the same side effects and if so, how did you deal with them? Should I be drinking more water, change to a micronized form or perhaps just quit taking it altogether?

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Why are you using Creatine? It does make one retain water, but should NOT make you gain five lbs in 1 week.

it depends...depending on how much water you're drinking...the water retention can vary from person to person...you may try other forms of creatine for better absorbtion(micronized, CEE).......the sideeffects are very common...

Hi Ivan. I thought the weight gain was a little excessive myself, but that was just my (rather horrified) opinion!

Hi Menace. I went on the web and found out that undisolved creatine in your system can cause the nastier side effects, which is why I was wondering if the micronized might be better. I've gone off of it for now (tired of being uncomfortable and looking pregnant....), but may pick up some micronized creatine on my next trip to the city.

Thanks for your reply.

Deni - creatine can cause some water retention - it helps pull water into your muscles.

Definitely opt for a micronized form. it will be easier on your system and be better utilized.

Deni - looking at your profile and goals, I am wondering why you are using creatine right now?

Give your routine time to work (switch it up after 6-8 weeks), AND GO AS FAR AS YOU CAN BEFORE ADDING ANY SUPPLEMENTS(STUPID CAPS LOCK!)

Creatine may be beneficial as you become more advanced and are lifting heavier. Maybe you are more advanced than I gather from your profile?

I would start you with a decent multi-vitamin, twice a day and essential fatty acids. A good routine and nutritional plan should get you a lot of results as a beginner.

Thanks asimmer!

The main draws for creatine were the increased energy, (with 4 young boys, that's a plus...lol), and the quicker muscle recovery time. I'd been doing the advance pilates for a couple of months before starting the weight training again, and even though I wasn't overloading the weights, the first few days I felt like I'd gone a couple of rounds in the ring with a pro wrestler....After using the creatine, I didn't have that problem.

I take vitamins regularly and am a firm believer in a healthy diet. I never thought about the fatty acids, so I'll have to look into that. I do tend to fall far short on the sleep requirements though.......

After reading your post, I can see that I will just have to be patient and quit looking for the "quick fix".

Thanks for your help and I'd just like to say that you are a true inspiration to the rest of us women who are just starting our journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

Creatine advertising and creatine realtities are 2 different things. Look past the hype. Your body produces creatine daily from the combining of 3 amino acids in the liver. Arginine, Glycine and Methionine. It is not the magic they make it out to be.

Also the body absorbs creatine better with sugary mixture....I mix mine with a lot of lemonade mix and haven't had any side effects in a very very low time and I take regular creatine monohydrate...I probably mix 12oz of water with enough lemonade mix to go for 32-48+oz of water....but it works me.....however this is all very individual in many cases so what works for me may not for others....micronized forms might be better although more expesive.....as are creatine ethyl ester .....but again they might be considerably more expensive I got my bottle of 102 dosages of 5 g for 7-8$....the other kinds will be considerably more ...
