Well then they should focus on their weight lifting and eating properly. High school football I take it?
Football programs have notoriously poor weight lifting programs...

Mass, or strength?
I usually put athletes looking to build mass on an undulating upper/lower split. This allows to build an appreciable amount of mass, as well as increasing strength levels and athleticism.
My football team in high school had a 130lb running back. I am from New York. We took 2nd in the state that year, and only lost in the last 14 seconds.
BFS is becoming popular among high school football players. It is a solid program, well thought out and well balanced.

answering your original question (lol, oops), A PWO protein and carbohydrate shake is the number 1 most effective supplement you could take for gaining mass. After that, I would recommend a multi-vitamin for basic health, and possibly creatine.

I am not an expert but I agree that a multi-vitamin daily and Muscle Milk supplements helps me do just that. I am gaining muscle and getting leaner. I weight train 5 days week with F.T.'s program. I have 1.5 - 2 servings of Muscle Milk per day. Its worth a try if you can afford it.
