I decided to lift at school because theres a meet in 2 weeks and my friend noticed that I lifted pretty slow (slow controlled drop, slow controlled push). When I got done with my set and looked around, other people seemed to just be dropping the weight then pushing it back up. They could push it back up but there didnt seem to be control on the way down. Is there a difference in the way you control the weight on the way down? will my bench still go up if I do the same reps/sets as they do?

Competition requires a pause at the chest. For all other things strength, the concentric should be as explosive as possible, with a controlled eccentric.
