i have been doing the weight training program offered by ft and it has been going very well. up until last week the gym that i go to provided all the machines that i needed to do my workout, but this week i have run into a problem. some of the workout are using machines that my gym is not equipt with, what should i do are there alturnative ways to use some of the machines that i have. (for example one exercise is the machine squats, and my gym does not have dumbells or a squat machine) please help i can't go to a different gym because of my circumstances being what they are...

do you have a squat rack with barbell and weights? what about a smith machine?

no dumbells? are you sure it's a gym?

there are many ways to do same exercises so you can definitely substitute exercises or do different variations....

no, no, no, and yes. it is the gym that is free at the apartment complex i am currently at. it has a lot to offer, but they had a problem with people stealing the free weights, hence no free weights. i am doing the best i can with what i have, i was just hoping for a way to do the exercise without free weights.

Pick up a small dumbell set. We picked up one that comes compact in a briefcase...4x7.5lbs 4x2.5lbs and 2 bars with grips and locks...yeah the dumbells only go to 20lbs ea but it is very helpful...Walmart $35cdn

thanks i think that is what i am going to have to do for now until i can get to a different gym. what about my calves, we deffinately don't have a machine for them, i have been doing some exercises on my own, but i really was trying to stick to the exercises provided do you think that it is neccesary to stick to them exact or can i do variations on my own?

Try this...hold the dumbells on your shoulder (using hands of course!) place balls of feet on a step and raise and lower heals. I find my calves get the sorest of all my muscle groups...so start out with no weight use light weights at first. This will work the same as a machine. If you find this isn't working your calves enough, just increase the reps until you feel the burn, you can also do a hold at the end of each set.

Good Luck!
