i've totally accepted that females won't get bulky from lifting weights but if one was going to lift heavy how will the body be affected? or indeed change?

you'll gain some added strength and muscle...reduce body fat....generally you can get into the kind of shape that you see contestants in figure competitions ....but nothing crazy....

wow. You will feel amazing! it is a powerful, self sufficient feeling to be able to lift heavy, to have muscles, to be strong!
Lift heavy, sweat hard, you will notice that you drop bodyfat, you increase your energy production, little things in life are easier... your confidence increases... people start asking you what you have been doing... you smile a lot more...
of course, results will depend on what you are eating, as well.

Well put Amy.

Amy's reply is right on the money! I think once you start lifting the physical changes are almost secondary to the psychological changes! Lifting heavy is very empowering:dumbbell::dumbbell:
