I'm always reading how eccentric movements are the best for building strength,So does the lowering phase of the bench press matter more than the lifting phase? That seems really strange. Thanks.
Research does show that this portion of the lift inflicts more damage on the muscle, but don't just train for it. I would suggest repping out, then on the last couple with a spot do some quality negatives.
A cool way of training if you want to totally emphasize the eccentric movement, have someone spot you and just explode up with their help with heavier weight than you know you can do, then have them spot you with the eccentric portion. The key is heavier weight than you know you can use, so a spotter is essential for both parts of the movement. The down portion of the lift will take longer than the concentric portion which you do not want to spend any time with at all(little effort) in this style of training.
