I am 5'4 140 athlete heading off to a Div 1 college to play softball. I work out 4 days a week, today I went to the student health fair at my high school and a lady there told me I should cut carbs out of my diet. Is this really good for me to do my dad tells me I shouldnt do that since i am an athlete.

You need carbs. She might be talking specific types. They are your main fuel source. Check out fitbuddy (at the bottom of the page) and do a search of the site regarding carbs.... lots of discussion about this, types of carbs and so on.

I gotta say I'm with Tim on this. At best she must have meant certain types. For an athlete to cut carbs out of their diet would be disastrous. Take Tim's advice and do some searches on carbs here. Also would be a good idea for you to browse the specific diet and nutrition forum since your new to the site. There's gobs of info here and all free. Best of luck to you and welcome to FT!!!

I have oftentimes recommended reduced carb diets for my clients.
However...

I would NEVER recommend cutting out any carbohydrates to an athlete.

Think about who is telling you this. Some lady at a health fair at your high school, not someone that works with athletes. While cutting down on carbs may be a good idea for a large part of the American population, if you are an athlete and already eat a clean diet, it is not a good idea.

If you eat a clean diet, then slight decrease in carbs might be alright. Perhaps rebalancing your carbs to include mostly complex, low glycemic varieties is a good idea.....This might work well especially if you slightly bump up your protein and healthy fats intake....

Low carb or no carb diets are unhealthy IMO....I would generally avoid them ....especially for athletes....
