Hypothetically here, say you had to make a decision what would you pick?
Eat an unhealthy snack, for instance a bag of chips, snack cake, etc, or would you just skip the calories/meal?
I find myself looking at this problem about 4 times a week and usually choose the unhealthy (more fat or sodium so I work out more the next day). But I was wondering which would be the most counterproductive to my goals. I want to gain muscle (imagine that one right?). I have balanced my diet lately and it has had a huge impact on reaching my goals. I worked out for a year and barely had any results, in the last 2 months I have made huge gains just by looking at my diet. Thanks for all the help, you guys seriously rock.

Why not prevent the problem and carry a healthy snack with you? Especially if you know it is going to arise, but never miss a meal.

In this day and age with all the food choices we have around us..there should be no need to choose an unhealthy snack...When my family and I are out and starting to get hungry,we head to the grocery store to pic up some veg & dip or some fresh fruit salad...

Hypothetically speaking, this depends on your goals, metabolism, how long its been since you last ate, when the next time you can eat will be, whether you are gaining or losing, what you did exercise wise prior and later in the day, etc.

The only reason that I would do it is when I feel myself getting hungry and I know it would be 2 hours or so before I could really eat. I am trying to gain here, so I realize it isn't as horrible to eat unhealthier. I only do it on workout days so I make sure to have the energy/calories to work out.
As far as healthy snacks go though, it is hard to carry them on you without having a refrigerator. I get sick of peanuts and stuff. Any other suggestions??

It is far better to have something than go too long with nothing. Especially so the leaner you are.

How about apples, other fruit. There are some decent granola bars out there, I like the ones made by Kashi. South Beach diet has snack pack whole wheat crackers and cookies made with whole wheat. Try making your own trail mix with nuts, dried fruit, and some good dry cereal.
